Statement from Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. The statement below is by Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. on behalf of the Board of Commissioners regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6 – 3 decision to reject the ban on bump stocks that allow semiautomatic rifles to fire at machine gun strengths. This country has reached a point of identity crisis. What sort of nation do we want to be? The onus of that question falls not just on those who choose public service, but on all Americans. We used to pride ourselves as a nation of peace, justice, and solutions, but the Supreme Court’s decision to prioritize the access to lethal weapons shows a different America than what we aspire to be. To say I am disappointed in the court’s decision would be a tragic understatement. Thoughts and prayers are no longer sufficient when it comes to the gratuitous bloodshed of our fellow citizens. The proposed ban on bump stocks first came to light following one of the deadliest mass shootings in history, when a lone gunman with a bump stock semi assault rifle opened fire at a Las Vegas hotel room killing 60 people and injuring hundreds more. To see the worst shooting in our nation’s history, at a time where public shootings are as common as the flu, still come with no consequences or provisions to ensure nothing like this can happen again is outrageous. Unfortunately, any consequential progress will only be made possible by civilian engagement. Contact your local representatives and let them know loud and clear that you support a federal ban on bump stocks, and common-sense gun control.

MAINE SLAUGHTER SHATTERS OUR ILLUSIONS ABOUT GUNS I am a gun owner and a Second Amendment guy pretty much all the way. I have told you before that I go virtually nowhere without my sidekick, “Freddo,” a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield EZ 9 mm, a comfort for an old man traveling widely throughout the country with dozens of death threats from a certain political community. But my support for gun ownership has limits, and here’s why. THE SCRIPTURE. “Then He said to them, ‘But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.’” – JESUS OF NAZARETH, LUKE 22:36, NKJV The Greek term for “sword” here is, ‘Machaira’ [μάχαιρα], translated as: “Properly, a slaughter-knife; a short sword or dagger mainly used for stabbing; (figuratively) an instrument for exacting retribution; lit. a large knife or a small sword with the power to inflict punishment.” My Point: God did not teach us to purchase a weapon of massive destruction, such as an AR-15 as that used by the Maine shooter, or an AK-47, the rifle of choice for most mass killers, or other semi to fully automatic military assault weapons. I am not talking here about long rifles or shotguns used primarily for hunting, but also appropriate for self-defense. Only the slaughter machines such as that used in Maine. In the ongoing fierce debate amongst Christians on gun control, I came across what I consider a balanced, truly Christocentric View of this controversial issue that pretty much speaks my heart. MICHAEL W. AUSTIN is professor of philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University, where he specializes in ethics. His most recent book is Being Good: Christian Virtues for Everyday Life (2012). The following remarks are taken from his recent essay for Christian Research Institute titled, “The Gun Control Debate,” published on April 22, 2023 (edited). “To be clear, I am not a pacifist [neither is God], and the gun law position I am advocating does not require Pacifism. However, the weight of the Biblical evidence at least supports a fairly strong antiviolence position, stronger than the position I am defending here concerning restrictive gun laws. If I was in a situation in which I had a gun and could use it to defend perhaps myself, but certainly my family, students, or other potential victims, I think I would do so. But I would deeply regret being in a situation where the protection of innocent life seemingly required the taking of another life. I would prefer to live in a society where those who are determined to harm others have a much more difficult time obtaining firearms to carry out their immoral intentions ... Transformational Leadership: A Case Study from History In the face of adversity, true leaders rise. Today, we’re journeying back to a pivotal moment in Australian history that showcases transformational leadership at its finest. In 1996, Australia was shaken by the Port Arthur gun massacre, the last mass shooting in the country’s history. This horrific event, which claimed 35 lives and wounded 23, left a lasting scar on the nation’s psyche. Yet from this tragedy emerged an example of genuine transformational leadership. Just 12 days after the massacre, then Prime Minister John Howard announced a sweeping and controversial gun reform—the National Firearms Agreement (NFA). This strong, controversial move targeted automatic and semi-automatic guns, sparking a nationwide debate. Tim Fischer, the leader of the Nationals Party, stood shoulder to shoulder with the Prime Minister, leading the implementation of the program. Despite representing the rural sector, where resistance to gun reform was strongest, Fischer took the initiative to meet with those most opposed to the reform. The NFA introduced a gun buy-back program, removing prohibited weapons from circulation by purchasing them at fair market value. This initiative led to the destruction of 659,940 guns at a cost of $500 million, funded by Australian taxpayers through increased taxes and an additional Medicare levy. Resistance was inevitable. The gun lobby swung aggressively into action, politicians broke ranks to form new parties opposing the changes, and many people in rural Australia felt angry and under attack. This was not the first attempt at gun control reform in the country. But what set it apart was the leadership’s determination to stand against significant resistance and self-interest and implement transformational change for the greater good. They prioritised the welfare of the Australian people over party interests, outspoken voter interests, and well-funded lobby groups. Leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility. It often involves making tough decisions that may not benefit everyone. ⚪️ So, what do you do when faced with a difficult decision? ⚪️ Do you prioritise yourself, your team, your department, your company, your customers? ⚪️ Will you be the leader who stands for what is best for those that matter the most? The Port Arthur massacre was recently explored again, through the eyes of those who were there, in the Australian ABC series ‘I was actually there’. Well worth a watch. https://lnkd.in/gErYkCr2

Hi all, Excited to announce that my collaboration with the Center for American Progress was just published. Our article explores and debunks the common myth that guns make us safer. This work builds off of GVPedia's report on the Defensive Gun Use Lie that we released last year: https://lnkd.in/gxTCReyq Accurate information is critically important in fighting America’s epidemic of gun violence. Just as important, however, is countering inaccurate information. Until the defensive gun use myth is defeated, Americans will continue buying firearms in the mistaken belief that those guns will make them safer, and gun violence will continue unabated. https://lnkd.in/gc7WCsVQ

All US citizens beware: Democrats push HR 1808 / then in 2023 S.25 - Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 and many other gun models! Democrats continue their attempts to take away ownership of many gun styles, designs, even some pistols unless grandfathered. Making it illegal with harsh consequences! If you are a second amendment advocate then please stay informed on what the liberal agenda is doing to take away your ability to defend yourself in this “modern high tech world.” You have the constitutional right to maintain a “current or modern weapon design” to protect yourself and family from threatening foreign or domestic adversaries of the US or other criminals meaning to cause you harm!! Idiots, mentally ill, felons, criminals, adversaries to the US all abuse their right to own and use a gun here in the US as to harm others. STOP the invasion of millions of illegals swarming our borders entering the US illegally. STOP the fentanyl also coming over our borders killing thousands of US citizens. Far more than those deaths caused by Gun shot. STOP the illegal smuggling of long guns, pistols, machine guns, war style weaponry presently being smuggled into the US. We legal gun owners will have to possibly face off against these war style weapons to assist our law enforcement or military. So NO to you Democrats trying to disarm US citizens or put us in harms way by not allowing us to having fire power to defend ourselves!!!!!! Legal US gun owners use their guns to safely and responsibly hunt, use for sport and unfortunately at times as self Defence !!! DM

There are over 400 million #guns in the United States. There were about 50,000 gun deaths in 2021. That's one gun death for every 8,400 guns. Given our extremes, and how heavily armed we are, our current rate of gun violence could be seen as an endorsement of our civility and restraint. In the final post in our series on the #secondamendment, we're exploring the evolution of public opinion and public behavior around gun ownership. Ultimately, guns are a political problem. And we're hopeful because political problems are solvable.
There’s always hope

OCTOBER 26, 2023 - Statement from President Joe Biden on the Shooting in Lewiston, Maine BRIEFING ROOM - STATEMENTS AND RELEASES Once again, our nation is in mourning after yet another senseless and tragic mass shooting. Today, Jill and I are praying for the Americans who’ve lost their lives, for those still in critical care, and for the families, survivors, and community members enduring shock and grief. I also urge area residents to heed the warnings and guidance of local officials. Numerous Federal law enforcement personnel are on the scene and actively working with state and local partners. As I told Maine Governor Janet Mills, Senators Collins and King, and Congressman Golden last night, I have directed my administration to provide everything that is needed to support the people of Maine. We will continue to be there every step of the way. For countless Americans who have survived gun violence and been traumatized by it, a shooting such as this reopens deep and painful wounds. Far too many Americans have now had a family member killed or injured as a result of gun violence. That is not normal, and we cannot accept it. While we have made progress on gun safety through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the two dozen executive actions I’ve taken, and the establishment of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, it’s simply not enough. Today, in the wake of yet another tragedy, I urge Republican lawmakers in Congress to fulfill their duty to protect the American people. Work with us to pass a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, to enact universal background checks, to require safe storage of guns, and end immunity from liability for gun manufacturers. This is the very least we owe every American who will now bear the scars — physical and mental — of this latest attack. ###

Gun violence threatened to swamp America’s cities in the 1980s and ‘90s. But looking back, regulatory attempts to turn that tide may have unintentionally turbocharged the gun industry by radicalizing gun proponents. An important report pushing back on the deadly myth that guns make us safer. A myth that the gun industry has made into an equally deadly marketing tool. Just one of the critical points raised - the racism baked in to stand your ground (SYG) laws: “Emboldened by a ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ culture, too many armed individuals have used deadly force as a first response, rather than a last resort. More concerning, gun homicides in which white shooters invoked SYG after killing Black victims were determined justifiable by the legal system five times more often than when the situation was reversed, indicating serious racial disparities in the defensive use of firearms.” We have so much work to do.

What would our country look like if we had an assault weapon ban? I often wonder what the answer is to this question. Although no one can be sure, I know that families in Uvalde, Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas would be celebrating more graduations, birthdays, and weddings. Assault weapons took these special days from people across our country, and the truth is, they didn’t have to. We use the term assault weapon to describe semi-automatic guns designed for military use and quick, efficient killing. The term, coined and popularized by the gun industry, has gained notoriety over the years due to the devastation that they’ve brought across the country. In 1994 Congress took action; they banned assault weapons making a clear statement that weapons of war do not belong on our streets. And for quite a long time they didn’t. It wasn’t until 2004, that the federal assault weapon ban ended, and it has since wreaked havoc on our communities with hundreds dead, and thousands injured. In the decade after the ban ended, there was a staggering 183% increase in massacres and a 239% increase in fatalities. More generally, in shootings where assault weapons or large-capacity magazines are used, 155% more people are shot and 47% more people are killed. Assault and large-capacity weapons have the capability to kill as many people as possible as fast as possible, and with easy access across the country enables deadly action. Today, activists and legislators are working together at the state and federal levels to get these guns off of our streets to protect our communities. To learn more about what we at @Brady: United Against Gun Violence are doing to pass a new ban, visit us at https://lnkd.in/e2AXwrXR.
