Have you heard of our Fernie Works program? 🏀 Fernie Works is a training and employment readiness program for youth aged 16-24. It's more than just a job---it's a community of young people making positive contributions to society each and every day, making connections and learning lifelong skills along the way. 🧡 It's less of a ‘program’, and more of a real-life support community, encompassing techniques for supported living and care that all young people deserve. From our experience, we know three significant factors contribute to success in a person’s life: 1️⃣ Timely application of resources 2️⃣ Healthy and supportive network 3️⃣ Significant, positive adult relationships Fernie Works aims to provide participants with all three of these essentials, supporting youth to live more positive, purposeful lives. Learn more about Fernie Works through the link below. 🤝 ➡️ https://fernieyouth.ca #fernieyouth #caringbeyondreason #scarborough #nonprofitorganization #youthadvocacy #communitysupports #youthjustice

Every 100 minutes, someone is fatally injured at work, never returning home to their families and loved ones. It means that every day, a child’s life is forever changed. Along with the grief of losing a parent or the stress of caring for an injured parent, the children of these injured workers can no longer count on that parent’s income, and the likelihood that they cannot afford a college education increases significantly. Kids’ Chance is bridging that gap by providing scholarships and support to the children of workers who have been injured on the job. If you know someone who may be eligible, please share this link with them: https://ow.ly/vtQb50Q5xh8 #KidsChance #Scholarships #WorkersComp #KidsChanceAwarenessWeek

Independent Social Worker. Best Interest Assessor, Expert Witness Social Work CoP, Practice Educator, Training & Systems Design. A love of the topic of Transitional Safeguarding Director of Halo Consultancy Services.
#Freeloavesonfriday #socialwork #reflection #systemchange My social work career has extended itself to over 22years so far, and every day has been a privilege to work with people who want, need and deserve change. I always thought I’d be a children’s social worker, but I ended up working in adult services for 17years. I had the opportunity to move across to children’s, primarily to focus on quality and practice in children’s placements, but a world also opened up to me at the time about the lack of understanding of the MCA in children’s practice. This created something within me that made me want to learn so much more about the experiences of young people moving through adolescence. 💛I had the opportunity to learn about the care system that has failed a lot of children, as well as how the trauma from childhood is carried through adolescence to adulthood (there isn’t enough focus on this in SW training IMO). As a social worker, I learnt so much from the experience, and I felt privileged to work alongside young people who taught me so much. The professionals I worked alongside shared knowledge with me, and we exchanged valuable practice experiences to understand the whole life cycle of a person who may need support from services. 💛 This book arrived this morning, and within minutes of reading the first paragraph, it identifies as a further platform to learn from those who have experienced diversity. Too often I work alongside individuals that have not have the love, security and care needed throughout the most traumatic times of their lives. They reach adolescence and sometimes services cannot meet their needs, and very often the basics have often not been considered, which starts with safety and love. Anyone with an interest to learn or for the social workers who need to hear these important stories, then this book is a must read. This post doesn’t give this book the justice it deserves, but Im trying to encapsulate all that I learnt when a system is so inherently wrong, and this book sings loudly about the redirection that is needed so badly. 💛Rebekah Pierre and the team; the book is a wonderful collection of first hand experience. I am reading it with an internal ache for change 💛

🌟 Every young person deserves the chance to succeed, yet the reality is that 1 in 4 care leavers end up homeless within two years of leaving care. At Horizons, we're committed to changing this narrative. Our tailored one-to-one Horizons Mentoring Programme, empowers 16–18-year-old care leavers to thrive in their transition to adulthood. Here's how we do it: ✨We work closely with each young person, focusing on communication, self-esteem, and practical life skills. ✨Together, we set achievable goals based on their aspirations and guide them every step of the way. ✨We collaborate with social workers, schools, and other services to provide wraparound support for our mentees' well-being. Every person is unique, and so is our approach. By understanding their backgrounds and personal circumstances, we tailor our support to address their specific needs, breaking the cycle of social exclusion and homelessness. https://lnkd.in/e6KPm-Dw #HorizonsMentoring #BreakTheCycle

This is an incredibly important read for anyone working with or on behalf of young people. These issues are systemic and not the sole responsibility of schools. Only by working together with Central Government, inspectorates, MATs, LA’s, health, Police and voluntary sector colleagues can any sustainable progress be made. This is a UK wide issue and most certainly an issue across the NW, as I am in touch regularly with colleagues seeking to find solutions and ways forward to best (or better) meet needs. Whilst it was nice for Rochdale to be included as a case study, we are under no illusion about the journey. We have much more to achieve together, having challenges in Rochdale, like many other areas. I have been very grateful for the commitment and effort from MAT CEO’s, Headteachers, LA colleagues to get around the table this last two weeks and have open, honest dialogue about what we can do together to tackle this. Leaving blame at the door and attempting to tackle this issue systemically and without ego is how we have tried to frame this, focusing on needs and outcomes. We have more to change and adapt to get to where we need to be and yet remain confident that we will only make genuine progress via collaboration. However, consideration of the wider and nationally focused system issues need further development and thoughtfulness if longer-term the landscape is to improve. #raisingrochdale #relationships #righttosucceed #collaborativeadvantage #inclusion #hope

Slough’s Children & Young People’s Placement Sufficiency Strategy has been approved at cabinet. The strategy sets out our ambitions for children and young people who may become looked after or who are looked after over the next three years (2023-26) and will focus on 5 key priorities: 1. Strengthening Early Help and developing ‘Edge of Care’ and reunification support 2. A clear focus on our recruitment and retention of foster carers and developing options for children to exit residential care into a family home, where possible 3. Ensuring robust commissioning arrangements and value for money relationships with providers 4. Achieving permanence for children at the earliest opportunity 5. Providing care experienced young people with a variety of placement options and support to independence. Find out more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eGF2rc6n

I’ve been many things in my life. Among them: high school dropout, GED recipient, teen parent, welfare recipient, first generation college student, waitress, first generation college graduate, blue collar worker, working class parent, social worker, foster parent, teacher, grandparent, doctor, dean. I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again: I’m not special. Persistence was the most important aspect of my journey, along with mentors that empowered and challenged me. I try hard to be that person for those coming up behind me. Hands up. We must build the world we want by helping others grow. #giveahandup #bethementor #nextgenleaders #nextgenerationleaders #buildtheworld
