Exactly 12 hours after I learned about #CMXSummit while Googling around, I was on my way to the airport with #CMX tickets in my inbox! What an incredible event it was, dedicated to the curious discipline of #CommunityBuilding, filled with scholars, authors, psychologists, executives, investors, community builders, and community lovers alike. Thanks to CMX, Bevy and sponsors, I met many passionate, engaged, and generous community folk. I only wish the event was 3x LONGER! :) KEY TAKEAWAYS: 🌟 People with a strong sense of community are 2.6 times healthier. 🌟 To strengthen community health, help people to: 1) form new connections, 2) strengthen them, and 3) sustain them. 🌟 Be intentional. How can you help people go deeper? 🌟 Belonging is a feeling. "It always seems impossible until it's done" - Nelson Mandela I realised last week that organising and running events is a lot like raising a child: things rarely go to plan, it's often stressful, but it's also so rewarding! 😍 #NextTechFest was Next Tech Girls' first ever in-person community meetup, hosted by our partners Makers. It was also the first in-person event I had organised in about six years!! Here are three things I learned from the experience: 👉 No matter how well you plan, things WILL go wrong. The key is to be flexible and adapt; find an alternative solution quickly and keep moving. 👉 Always allow extra time! That way if a workshop overruns or a speaker's running late, it's a lot easier to adapt without the whole agenda being affected. 👉 The most important thing is that people are having a good time! The purpose of an event is to serve the attendees, whether that's with knowledge, networking or entertainment. If your attendees are happy then you're doing a good job! Lots went wrong on Friday but thankfully most went unnoticed as I was surrounded by a brilliant team of co-organisers, speakers and mentors, who helped solve every problem and make the event the huge success that it was! 🙏 I loved seeing lots of the girls and women I've worked with over the last year on previous events or work experience placements connecting with each other. It was also so nice to finally meet so many of our community who I'd previously only engaged with over video calls, social media or email! 🧡 The feedback from attendees so far has been so beautiful to read. My hope was that the event would help girls and women to connect through their common interests and career goals, learn new skills and develop personally and professionally. This time of year is always a journey for me. I'm a perfectionist and chronic overachiever so the tendency is always to focus on areas I could have done more, or been better. Thankfully I've got the best partner and some of the lessons I've poured into the girls, they've started giving right back! This year my oldest challenged me to find my gifts (my internal ones because she can't buy me any 😂) and Jason Hyman reminded me of the ways we're breaking barriers, creating pathways for others and redefining how we practice as planners. Our first event of 2024 is already planned and posted, we're gearing up to host an even more epic Lost Spaces conference in April (3rd year!!) and we've inspired similar concepts which I hear should be flattering. All that to say I'm grateful. I'm proud of what we achieved this year and am confident in the understanding that my gifts will always make space for me in years to come. Top 5 Wins of 2023 1. Houston 2036 Equity Symposium: Little did I know, this would set the theme of my work for the year and would also be my final project with Larry. 2. Lost Spaces Conference: This year solidified the conference as a staple and must attend event for emerging developers of color. We doubled our attendance, made connections that yielded several developer partnerships and ultimately projects currently underway in two Complete Communities. 3. Houston Business Journal 40 Under 40: A great reminder to stop playing small, but even when I do, the efforts speak for the passion. 4. Healthy Media Presence (Fox 26, Chronicle, Houston Landing): From feeding background info to offering expertise on camera, keeping the story of my community front and center is never taken for granted. 5. Expressed Community Trust: Building community is bigger than DEI. Neighbors reached out when they needed resources, felt uncomfortable at community planning initiatives led by outside groups, and when they had skills or property to share but needed to know it would be used appropriately. Each time I was honored and showed up with solutions and my sharpest tools. Confirmation that no matter how much farther I believe I should be, I'm always exactly where I need to be. 2024 is building on a pretty solid foundation and my sights are squarely set on my goals!
