The IEEE Computer Society invites interested academics, policy experts, computing professionals, and civil society leaders to participate in an international event on Digital Platforms on Societal Harms which will take place in Washington DC on October 2nd and 3rd. This novel event features invited international speakers with backgrounds in public policy, government, artificial intelligence, and other computing technologies and will focus on solutions to the challenges of hate speech, extremism, exploitation, misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms. Our keynote panels can be attended in person or online (either live or via a recording at your convenience). Those participating in-person will have access to additional sessions and benefits including:  * The opportunity to share research / products / services / work in this space by providing a poster and / or software demos (NB: posters are for display only and will not be published). * Networking opportunities with others working in this space across disciplines and sectors. * Small group discussions to share thoughts on the panels and add expertise from the attendees to the discussion. * An introductory session to IEEE’s work in public policy and standards followed by workshops. to discuss potential new engagements in the public policy and standards space to tackle hate speech, extremism, exploitation, misinformation and disinformation. * A number of expert workshops addressing the event’s themes. Humbled to have given a keynote at OPODIS in Tokyo. An interesting question I had to answer is what is the future of accountability in distributed systems. Lately I've been given some time to focus on deeper learning; not only about applications and methods, but more fundamental concepts of both business and human - and their relations with upcoming technologies. Hans Roslings #Factfulness and Dacher Keltners The Power Paradox provided me with insights on the level of importance of human behaviour in changing paradigms. Both are worth reading, and Dacher explains himself as well in this video https://lnkd.in/gr9e6ytz

Chuang Tzu's statement highlights the interconnectedness and interdependence of opposite forces and ideas. The fluidity of Yin and Yang, as represented in Tai Chi, demonstrates the ever-changing nature of existence. It emphasizes the need to embrace the complementary aspects of life and to find balance within opposing forces. In the binary number system, the declaration of on or off illustrates the fundamental concept of digital computing and the clear distinction between two opposite states.

Let's celebrate the brilliant mind of Claude Shannon, the Father of Information Theory! His groundbreaking work in "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" led to a conceptual breakthrough that laid the foundations of information theory. Shannon's ideas about "bits" revolutionized the way we process and exchange information in a digital form.
