Greener Architecture is here! 💚 Driving the charge to net-zero architecture, University of Cambridge has devised a method to recycle cement to produce ultra-low-emission concrete, while cutting the carbon footprint of steelmaking. Architects Climate Action Network chair Brigitte Clements said that the new process is “the first step” towards a new era of sustainable building practices and reducing the environmental footprint of one of the world’s most essential materials. Want to find out more about the process and impact? Check out our blog for the whole scoop, link in the comments below. 👇 #Sustainability #SustainableArchitecture #Architecture #Architect

The role of the architect is about more than designing buildings. Architecture and space are always related to social issues and challenges. This means that architects may be well placed to contribute to the public debate on challenges that also will have a spatial impact: climate change, mobility issues, the housing crisis, healthcare and migration. This issue of OASE explores the possible roles of architects as public intellectuals and the ways in which they can contribute to society beyond design. Edited by Tom Avermaete, Véronique Patteew, Elsbeth Ronner, and Hans Teerds. https://lnkd.in/e8zfjeGF

How can we use more of the tree? 🌳 A very important question circulating the sustainable architecture, engineering and forestry world. It is clear we need to build more buildings with timber, but we also need to learn how to use a lot less of it, for our very small supply in the UK to go further. Studio Bark hosted a timber workshop with students from UEL School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering that asked this same question. Finding ways to use smaller and lower grade timber in a structural system. This included round timber ‘spindles’ and columns using the inherent strength of the trunk and allowing smaller cross sections to be used. It is inspiring to be involved with the UEL Construction Week each year, and the huge amount of sustainable and social innovation and care which comes out of it. #timberconstruction #sustainableconstruction
Our Master of Architecture students presented their projects to industry experts during Construction Week. A big thank you to AKT II and Studio Bark for mentoring our aspiring architects. #architecturedesign #uel #ACEatUEL #Sugarcrete #sustainablearchitecture Bamdad Ayati Armor Gutiérrez Rivas
