As our 2050 net zero deadlines approach, the global structural engineering community is diligently working to decarbonise the built environment. Rather than just achieving structural integrity, the focus now is on sustainable methodologies. This drive towards more sustainable building and infrastructure is influenced by various internal and external factors, but awareness around climate change is undeniably a key driving force. Key projects that demonstrate this shift include the Holbein Gardens project by Heyne Tillett Steel, College Amadou Hampté Bâ by MHA Structural Design, and Haut by Arup. The Holbein Gardens transformation sets a new benchmark for environmental conservation by integrating sustainability in their entire development process. The project sets a precedent in the UK for directly reusing structural steel, incorporating significant amounts of reclaimed steel in the project while striving to minimise the carbon footprint. The College Amadou Hampté Bâ project in Niger is an illustration of the principle of using the right material at the right time. By successfully making use of locally available Laterite for load-bearing walls and roofs, the college has not only created a cost-effective solution but has also highlighted the sustainable implications of this decision. Further showcasing timber as a viable, sustainable building material, Haut by Arup—a bio-based construction in Amsterdam—is one of the world's tallest timber-hybrid buildings. Pioneering the strategic use of timber, this construction is part of Amsterdam's ambitious goal to incorporate timber as the main structural material in at least 20% of its new residential buildings starting 2025. These diverse projects are a testament to the efforts of engineers to minimize carbon emissions while ensuring structural integrity. They serve as a reminder that sustainable and eco-friendly choices are crucial for the future of our built environment. #sustainability #engineering

June 26th is the deadline for submittals for the $150,000,000 #NOFA (notice of funding availability) of the $1.1 billion ish that #leecounty received from #HUD towards affordable housing establishment in #LMI (low to moderate income) markets and is sure to spark at least 10-15 new projects and likely close to 2,000 new units of mixed income, work force and #affordablehousing develolment! Many groups have been tying up dirt in hopes to execute in this much needed market but has created some artificial feeling of demand on #mfland and dramatic pricing pushes back toward premiums not seen since peaks of a 18 months ago. I anticipate a lot of land coming back to market in September and October due to the limited capacity of these funds and the extravagant push by outside entities looking to profit off this huge opportunity for our county! I’m praying for wisdom and knowledge to intercede with our leadership in seeing when and if developers are paying whatever it cost to buy land and then hope to ma populate appraisers to set pricing that isn’t real just to seek “free money.” Groups like The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers with Marcia Davis at the lead and ReVital Development Group are a couple of the groups that care about their community and aren’t turning developments solely for profit but are purpose driven! Interested in strategies for achieving both carbon compliance and energy efficiency in building projects? The second article in our three-part series is entitled "Retrofitting for Net Zero: Get it Right First Time" and delves into the details of retrofitting as a key strategy to meet tough Net Zero goals. Our recent articles, co-authored by Cowan Architects directors Brendan Geraghty and Simon Spiteri RIBA, have generated a great deal of interest. The first, which focuses on the importance of safety in building design, attracted a huge response and was published in its entirety by Construction Week Middle East. Read Article 2 in full. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) commends the Biden-Harris administration for advancing a national definition of "zero energy building". This effort is aligned with AIA's commitment to sustainability and reducing the built environment's carbon footprint. A clear definition will guide industry professionals in designing and constructing energy-efficient buildings, supporting the transition to a greener future. AIA looks forward to collaborating with the administration and stakeholders to refine and implement this definition. The initiative marks a significant step toward achieving climate goals and promoting sustainable architecture. #AIA #BidenHarrisAdministration #ZeroEnergyBuilding #Sustainability #GreenFuture https://lnkd.in/gtukHYRx
