"Some of the nation’s largest employers, including Walmart and McDonald's, are now broaching a new frontier in higher education: convincing colleges to give retail and fast-food workers credit for what they learn on the job, counting toward a degree." "Through corporate training and certificates that convert to college credit, Walmart Academy aims to get workers as far as halfway to a college degree, the organization’s chief told NPR. Boop had done several such programs, which let her bypass two college courses." "McDonald’s is working with several community colleges to build a path for converting on-the-job skills, like safe food handling or customer service, into credit toward degrees in culinary arts, hospitality or insurance. Walmart has over a dozen short-form certificates and 25 training courses — in tech, leadership, digital operations — that translate to credit at partner universities. The car-service chain Jiffy Lube has its own college credit program, too." "That’s partly why hiring and education officials talk about a “skills-first approach” to higher education — a future of short-form certificates and credentials weighed on par with college degrees." '“For adults who feel like they weren’t college material, what we are able to do is say, ‘You are. And you’re doing college-level work already,’” says Amber Garrison Duncan, PhD, who runs the nonprofit Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN) that connects employers and higher-education institutions.' '“This definitely is a process that disrupts what traditional higher ed is used to, in terms of seat time — credit for sitting in a class and doing assignments,” says Brianne McDonough, M.Ed. at the workforce development nonprofit Jobs for the Future (JFF). “It’s a big change.”' #HigherEducation #SkillsFirstApproach #WorkplaceLearning https://lnkd.in/g6Q3nH9t

What has your representative done in his first year when most freshmen are instructed to just sit back and learn? Your representative is making an impact even in his freshman year: * Four bills under consideration * H 4544 - allows religious institutions to build tax exempt affordable housing on their property to help reduce our housing shortage. * H 4334 - makes it a statewide policy to set aside a percentage of affordable housing in all major developments AND it provides an educational component that helps residents become certified so that they can earn enough to afford market rate rents. * H 4015 - restricts the amount that landlords can charge on rental application fees which has been crippling those looking for a place to live. * H 3964 - provides tax incentives to corporations who give our small businesses large enough contracts that will require our businesses to hire more people from the community. (Black Wall Street concept). * The creation of a nonprofit, the District 25 Social Network, that focuses on the three major things that will uplift our communities: education, jobs and housing. In the first phase, we have worked on: * Bringing more GED programs to the District by working with local organizations such as District 25 Social Club, United Ministries and the Greenville County School District. From GEDs to certification to higher paying jobs is the game plan. * I’ve met with major employers in the District to plan upcoming job fairs and to encourage them to hire from within the District. * Working with one national developer and two local developers to strategize on developing more multi family, affordable housing neighborhoods. * We are also adding food insecurity to our top areas of focus in 2024. * I’ve also been appointed by the Speaker of the House to the committee created to study the effects of AI on our state. This will be critical for our community because AI can threaten many of our jobs. * I was also able to secure in excess of $80,000 for Upstate Circle of Friends to complete its medical wing that will serve Belle Meade and surrounding areas. We’ve conducted several town hall meetings in 2023 and emailed several newsletters, fulfilling our promises to keep the District informed. We’ve campaigned on both a policy and grassroots effort to uplift the District, and as you read above, promises have been kept. BUT we have so much more work to do. I need your vote. I need your support. I need your suggestions. We are RECLAIMING our District. We will REBUILD our District. And we will teach our children to REPEAT the same.

Recognizing that skills learnt in the workplace are both valuable and valid in the context of academic recognition is one step that higher education institutions can take towards engaging effectively with the broader public. With most polls in the US and UK showing declining regard or support for higher education it is one way of building engagement and attracting more people to study. The newly elected government formed by The Labour Party in the UK would do well to consider how this type of initiative could be developed. #intled #ukuniversities #usuniversities #highereducation #engagement #recognition #ordinaryworkingpeople #innovation #workplacelearning #

[New Post] Addressing the Worker Shortage: Hiring Young People in Afterschool Programs One of the major challenges facing the afterschool field is the worker shortage. One solution: expand our labor pool by hiring younger and older workers. Who would know better about the benefits of hiring youth and program alumni than the young people who were granted this employment opportunity? In 2015 we interviewed youth who worked in an afterschool program. We share some of their statements regarding their experiences in this blog. https://lnkd.in/gfiVKGuw

The Conservative party launched their manifesto on Tuesday, and at Catch22 we welcome the commitment to combat online harms and keep children safe online, and the renewed attention on fixing the criminal justice system. We welcome the focus throughout the manifesto on helping more people to work, but beyond the extra apprenticeships announced, we are lacking in meaningful announcements that would bridge the skills gap on many job seekers’ applications and offer for the wrap-around support many need when coming out of long-term unemployment. We welcome the reform for community sentences but would have liked to see a different attitude to tackling youth violence in a way that helps young people become productive members of their community in the long run. Finally, there is no concrete policy offering to care for experienced people, who we know are some of the most overlooked and would benefit the most from a uniform offering across local authorities. For more information on how our manifesto aligns to the Conservatives' announcements, please see: https://lnkd.in/dUcPHNTs

Day one at the #maoffsite24 and I learned that to date, Merit America has served 11,446 learners. More shocking: 6 years ago on this date, the very first cohort of 15 learners began in a room in DC. To date, we have driven over a billion (with a b) dollars in lifetime wage gains for learners who got successful placements. A billion. The numbers over 6 short years are mind-boggling. It leads me to believe that the numbers is 6 more years will be equally as mind-boggling. Why do I know that this is real? Because in the last 12 weeks, 5 learners in my current cohort *who have not even finished the program yet* have gotten job offers. And more job offers are in the works. Every placement is driving wage gains for them and their families, and every one of them is life-changing.

THREE REASONS TEENS DON'T CONSIDER CAREERS IN THE TRADES. At FSG we spend a lot of time talking with service leaders about the challenges of bringing young people into our industry. Of course the problem is not just in foodservice-related trades, it is societal and even global. So we need to look across organizational boundaries for information and ideas. Here is a very focused (short) article from the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) that I think really hits the bullseye. See if you think that I'm right. https://lnkd.in/gpMapsri
