Have your say on what the census could look like in the future. Public consultation on ‘Modernising our approach to the 2028 Census and beyond’ runs until 18 June 2024.

To deliver the census in 2028 and beyond, we are exploring the greater use of administrative data, supplemented by surveys and tailored approaches for data collection. We want your views on this.
“There is an opportunity to modernise how we collect data and continue to deliver value for money to the country,” says Government Statistician and Stats NZ Chief Executive Mark Sowden.
“The people of Aotearoa New Zealand want more and new data that is relevant to their daily lives, and they want it faster. We need to make use of new technology and data sources if we’re going to meet the needs and expectations of Aotearoa New Zealand in a sustainable way,” he says.
Following this consultation:
1. An independent panel will provide advice to the Government Statistician on choosing an approach to the 2028 Census and beyond.
2. Later this year, the preferred approach will go to Cabinet for consideration.
3. Stats NZ will then focus on the detailed design of the new approach to census. We will do this in continued collaboration with key customers, partners, and communities.
4. In 2025, a second round of public consultation will seek feedback on the detailed design and what it means for information needs.
