Refusing to rent to a family for using rental assistance is not only wrong, it’s illegal! We’re suing a Bakersfield landlord after a single mom came to us saying they refused to consider her application because her family was getting rent support from a local homeless center to get back on their feet. In California, landlords can’t turn anyone away for using housing assistance to pay for rent. The mother of three says she tried to tell the landlord that she had a job and would return to work once she found housing, but the property owner allegedly refused to give her the chance to explain. Everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their lives without discrimination. Details on this case below ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g4yMUPAQ

✊🏠 In 2023, we joined forces with Shelter to campaign for fairer renting, amplifying the voices of our customers who told us they wanted the Bank to drive meaningful, societal change on issues such as homelessness. Our campaign has called for the introduction of robust legislation to provide the answer to a broken private renting system that is impacting millions of renters across the country. The Renters Reform Bill could have been the answer. But due to amendments that have weakened and watered down this version of the bill, we no longer believe that it can deliver for renters. ❌ We cannot stand by a bill that doesn't take renters' concerns seriously, that provides loopholes for irresponsible landlords, and that does nothing to provide security and stability for the 500 renters facing no-fault evictions every single day. Together with Shelter, we are calling on all housing leaders to overhaul the Renters Reform Bill and instead, stand up for the 11 million renters counting on them to deliver tangible change. 🤝 Join us by showing your support and signing the open letter here: https://brnw.ch/21wJoMd #RenterReformBill | #Shelter

This property was occupied by a family who were in the process of being made homeless so they were given the keys to Grafton House & have lived here happily for 18 months. It's now empty and I have spent the last 3 months updating it ready for another family to move into. Come & see what I've done & how the finances stack up. Keeping people in their homes 🏠 Helping create a plan to clear debt and rent arrears 💸 Supporting people back into work or training 💼 Stopping people from being pushed into #homelessness is a far more effective way to end #homelessness, once and for all. But the #costoflivingcrisis continues to put thousands of Londoners under severe pressure, struggling to survive and at risk of being pushed over the edge. Our Homelessness #Prevention work every day to help Londoners stay in their own homes, but we urgently need more support, including a rise in #housingbenefit and additional help for renters. #HousingCrisis #Renting #Renters #EvictionBan

One way to help people stay healthy and housed is through Legal Support for Renters policies, like those that improve access to counsel for tenants. By reducing the risk of eviction and homelessness, these policies promote better health for renters and support their economic security. https://lnkd.in/gzKGjAWK

Section 21 evictions, also known as "no-fault" evictions, are a major cause of homelessness - at least 26,000 households have been evicted through the law since 2019, according to Shelter. Section 21 allows landlords to evict tenants with just two months’ notice without giving them a reason. This leaves thousands of people who are renting in the lurch, forever unstable and unable to find a place to build a life. The insecurity can place a huge burden on people affecting their health and wellbeing. Some renters are afraid to speak out about issues with their housing for fear of being evicted. In tomorrow's #KingsSpeech, the Government must stick to its manifesto pledge to "immediately" ban so-called no-fault evictions and deliver further improvements for renters through the Renters Reform Bill. Together, let's make renting safer, fairer and more secure for families across the country. Everyone deserves a place to call home. #HousingCrisis #HomelessnessAwareness #Renting #EvictionBan

🏠 Are you a landlord with spare property/rooms? Facing homelessness is a worrying experience for anyone, so we’re appealing to private sector landlords so we can continue to offer vital housing support to those most vulnerable. We can offer support for landlords to help house households who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. Currently, all types of accommodation are needed. Landlords will be offered cash incentives and extensive support for them and their tenants, in exchange for letting to residents who are at risk of homelessness or who are ready to move on from homelessness services and live independently. Support includes:- ✅ financial help to pay towards deposits and rent in advance, which is paid to landlords directly ✅ tenants support and advice to help ensure that tenancies are sustainable ✅ providing specialist advice on tenancy matters and changes in the law ✅ help to resolve disputes if they arise ✅ providing a named point of contact from the start Find out more here: https://orlo.uk/g8fUa
