U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Warns of Heightened Earthquake Threat to SF's Golden Gate Bridge. New data reveals California's increased risk of a major earthquake, prompting intensified efforts to safeguard vital infrastructure like the Golden Gate Bridge. The $400 million allocated through the 2021 infrastructure law, spearheaded by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is funding ongoing retrofitting, including seismic isolation bearings and energy dissipation devices, with the next phase focusing on the suspension bridge to fortify against the looming seismic threat. https://lnkd.in/g_Xz5Wzc #EarthquakeSafety #CommunityResilience #EarthquakeSafety #EmergencyPreparedness #seismicdesign #earthquake #earthscience #BusinessMakesCAWork #2024Inaugural! #lachamber #bizfed #earthquake #developers #seismicwaves #sela #ymca #realtors #usgbc #retrofits

“A 5.1 earthquake strikes near Oklahoma City.” This shouldn’t suprise anyone considering: While hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") plays a significant role in Oklahoma's natural gas production, pinpointing its exact contribution remains challenging. However, there's a correlation between fracking and increased earthquake activity in some regions, particularly due to wastewater disposal practices. Key points: Fracking itself rarely triggers earthquakes, but wastewater disposal deep underground can increase pressure on faults, potentially leading to larger events. Geological factors and pre-existing faults play a crucial role in earthquake risk. Areas with specific conditions are more susceptible. Most fracking-induced earthquakes are small and not felt, but larger ones have occurred, with the biggest recorded at magnitude 5.8 in Oklahoma (2016). Not all fracking leads to earthquakes, and other factors like natural activity can also cause them. Regulations and best practices for wastewater disposal can help reduce the risk of induced earthquakes. #oklahoma #oklahomaEarthQuakes #OklahomaEarthQuake #OKC #earthquake https://lnkd.in/gbqrHfbH

When people focus on "The Big One" like a magnitude 8 earthquake that happens only every few hundred years, they may feel fatalistic. Why should we prepare for something that is so rare and scary? But according to Sarah Minson of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), we should focus on the more common earthquakes that happen year in and year out. By being prepared for smaller to medium-sized quakes, we all can have a better foundation on what to do when "The Big One" comes. Read on for great insights in Sarah's interview about crisis preparedness overall 👉 https://lnkd.in/eh2rvpiv
