Today, the White House celebrates the 25th Annuversary of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). President Biden and Vice President Harris celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities, while also recognizing the systemic barriers to equity, justice, and opportunity that still put the American dream out of reach for far too many AA and NHPI people across the United States. For more than three years, the Biden-Harris Administration has leveraged the full force of the Federal Government to ensure the promise of America for all AA and NHPI communities — including by issuing an Executive Order establishing the President’s Advisory Commission and White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). https://lnkd.in/ebzN32bN

Dear Network, I am posting this to draw the attention of young people (aged between 20-35) to the unbeatable Faith and Politics Workshop in Venice, which will take place between August 18th and 25th, 2024. I participated in this program and can tell you that it did me a great service in reinvigorating my sense of public duty - and did so right at a time when I was on the verge of succumbing to cynicism. Whether you are a civic activist, aspiring politician, or merely an insufferable know-it-all, this program will help you nurture your ideas on the common good, broaden your perspectives, and join a community of like-minded young people. The last is especially important as, even years after the workshop, we stay in touch and support one another – something for which I could not be more grateful. I do not know if the organizers consciously chose Venice as the site for this programme, but there could be no more fitting place than the maritime city. Historically, Venice was characterized by a strict adherence to public service. Venetian patricians wore plain black robes, built no grand palaces, and refrained from erecting statues depicting themselves in heroic poses. Instead, the republic actively discouraged individualism and promoted a strong community spirit, bringing its citizens closer together than in other places. It is this Venetian spirit that forms the essence of the Faith and Politics Workshop. For more information, you can contact them directly through http://faithandpolitics.eu, and I encourage everyone to do so because they are the loveliest of people. Today, as our nation commemorates Indigenous Peoples Day, it is crucial that we acknowledge and embrace the truth about our shared history. While Columbus Day has been celebrated for centuries, it is essential to recognize that Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover America. Indigenous peoples were already flourishing across the vast lands, nurturing diverse cultures, and establishing thriving civilizations long before the arrival of European explorers. In the spirit of truth and unity, let us affirm the significance of Indigenous Peoples Day. By doing so, we honor the rich heritage, resilience, and contributions of the original inhabitants of this land. Today, we would like to share a personal connection to this powerful day, as our Chief Apostle Dr. Eloisa Crawley-Bonaparte and our 2nd Presiding Prelate Dr. A.Louise Bonaparte, carries the proud lineage of three tribes of Native Americans: Cherokee, Shinnecock, and Mohawk. This heritage flows through their veins, a testament to the enduring legacy of Indigenous peoples. By celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, we reject the fallacy that America was an empty canvas awaiting discovery. Instead, we acknowledge the profound civilizations that thrived across this continent for thousands of years. Our collective journey toward understanding and appreciating indigenous cultures serves as a stepping stone towards a more inclusive and compassionate society. Let us remember that embracing the truth about our shared history does not diminish the accomplishments and contributions of other cultures and individuals. It is not an attempt to rewrite the past, but rather an opportunity to rectify historical inaccuracies and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse tapestry that makes up our nation. By acknowledging the truth, we can pave the way for authentic healing and reconciliation. It is through this process that we can move forward as a united community, embracing the values of respect, empathy, and mutual understanding. Our commitment to honoring Indigenous Peoples Day is a testament to our dedication to justice and equality for all. Together, let us embark on this journey of truth, understanding, and unity. By celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, we not only honor the past but also pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future. In solidarity, Admin. Post

Overview Puerto Rico is a Spanish-speaking territory of the United States with a history shaped by conquest and resistance. For centuries, Puerto Ricans have crafted and negotiated complex ideas about nationhood. Jorell Meléndez-Badillo provides a new history of Puerto Rico that gives voice to the archipelago’s people while offering a lens through which to understand the political, economic, and social challenges confronting them today. In this masterful work of scholarship, Meléndez-Badillo sheds light on the vibrant cultures of the archipelago in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus and captures the full sweep of Puerto Rico’s turbulent history in the centuries that followed, from the first indigenous insurrection against colonial rule in 1511—led by the powerful chieftain Agüeybaná II—to the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1952. He deftly portrays the contemporary period and the intertwined though unequal histories of the archipelago and the continental United States. Puerto Rico is an engaging, sometimes personal, and consistently surprising history of colonialism, revolt, and the creation of a national identity, offering new perspectives not only on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but on the United States and the Atlantic world more broadly.
