Mosquito habitats are sometimes tricky to get to, so we’re testing out a drone this summer as part of our larviciding program. We'll be using the drone on six golf courses throughout #Winnipeg, including: 📍 Kildonan Park Golf Course 📍 Crescent Drive Golf Course 📍 Windsor Park Golf Course 📍 Harbour View Golf Course 📍 Rossmere Golf & Country Club 📍Tuxedo Golf Course Larviciding prevents mosquitoes from ever reaching the biting adult stage. It's also the most effective and environmentally acceptable method to reduce the mosquito population. Learn more: https://ow.ly/EUpP50PnTQ0

Need mosquito protection on-the-go? Tip #3: Avoid damp, low-lying areas where these pesky insects gather around stagnant water and wetlands to breed. Opt for higher ground whenever possible. 🌳🏕️ And when camping, pitch your tents at least 100 yards away from water sources to keep those buzzing critters at bay! #MosquitoProtection #MosquitoHero

Happy National Golf Day! Celebrating all the turf managers, golf course superintendents, grounds crew team members, and golfers who help make this industry thrive. Highlighting some environmental benefits of golf courses, from United States Golf Association (USGA): The total land area devoted to golf in the U.S. is relatively small, but courses can offer substantial environmental benefits – especially in developed areas where green space is increasingly limited. ⛳ - Turfgrass and other vegetation on a golf course help cool highly developed areas during hot weather. - Golf courses provide important habitats for native wildlife and vegetation and can help support threatened species. - Golf courses can help manage stormwater runoff, aiding in flood prevention. They also recharge groundwater supplies and filter surface runoff. - The vegetation on golf courses sequesters atmospheric carbon and helps improve air quality, especially in urban areas. #nationalgolfday #golfday #golf #sodstar #golfcourse #turfgrass

WATER SAFETY TIP: Spring is here, and the water is calling. Stay safe by avoiding low-head dams (often called “drowning machines''). If you think you spot one while you are boating, paddling or floating, do these 3 things: 1️⃣ Get out of the water. 2️⃣ Carry your boat, canoe or kayak around the dam. 3️⃣ Re-enter the river at a point well downstream. In cooperation with Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, we urge everyone to stay safe by avoiding low-head dams while enjoying rivers and streams. TU on TV! The Discover the U.P. outdoors television program recently covered a Trout Unlimited project in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to open 7.5 miles of high-quality upstream coldwater habitat to native brook trout in the appropriately-named Trout Creek by replacing a perched culvert that created a passage barrier. The project is part of Trout Unlimited’s 5-year, $40 million national partnership with the U.S. Forest Service funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to replace road-stream crossings that create aquatic organism passage barriers. It is funding significant work across the country like this to improve trout habitat and resiliency. Not only do these projects open miles of coldwater upstream habitat to trout and salmon, but they reduce flood risk, stabilize streambanks against erosion, and – in some cases – reduce average downstream temperatures as much or more than climate change is expected to warm them in the coming decades. #inFISHstructure does all this while supporting rural economies by hiring experienced local contractors, improving regional recreational tourism opportunities, and relieving county road commission burdens for the projects.
