As we commemorate Pride Month and Juneteenth, I am reminded of the ongoing journey towards equality, freedom, and dignity for everyone. Pride Month is a time to honor the LGBTQIA+ community’s resilience and the strides made towards achieving equal rights. It’s a celebration of love, identity, and the courage to be oneself in the face of adversity. Juneteenth, marks a pivotal moment in American history—the end of slavery. It’s a day to reflect on the struggles for racial equality and to recommit to building a future where everyone can thrive without discrimination. Both Pride Month and Juneteenth embody the spirit of liberation and the importance of standing up for what is right. They raise our level of awarness about the importance of LGBTQIA+ rights and the historical significance of Juneteenth. They remind us to be vigilant and proactive in recognizing the value of every individual. On my team, we have a saying - "Do the right thing" ...and doing the right thing means standing up for human rights, advocating for social justice, and ensuring our daily practices align with these values. To the African-American, Black, Native and Indigenous people in my life - know that you are seen, celebrated, and affirmed for simply existing. Your contributions to society are absolutely necessary. Equality is the minimum and equity is on the horizon. Stand fast in your value, in your dignity, and in the greatness that you are. To the LGBTQIA+ folks in my life - let's celebrate this month! Celebrate our visibility and acceptance, knowing that visibility in and of itself is a privilege. To my LinkedIn connections - let’s continue to do the right thing. It’s Juneteenth and it’s June. Let’s celebrate both well, but not confuse them! June is pride month 🌈, and as an #ally, I’m proud to support and honor the diversity & equality of my friends and family. Inspired by the Stonewall riots, which was a series of gay liberation protests, in 1969. #Juneteenth is the day when all enslaved people were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation and were officially legally released from their bonds. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and 6-months before the 13th Amendment was signed into law in Dec 1865. Another important celebration speaking to diversity, inclusion and equality. Celebrating and amplifying the backgrounds, cultures, and traditions of those around us is an essential component of learning about the values, religions, politics, languages, and gender representations that help make our world the unique place that it is, and the basis of respect & trust. Two important ingredients in living in #Peace! It’s Important too to understand the difference between Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: #Diversity: Diversity goes beyond simply recognizing and understanding someone’s race—it also involves including and honoring those from a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, political affiliations, languages, genders, ages, nationalities, and sexual orientations. This diversity creates a world comprised of people who bring a broad wide range of social, physical, and cultural attributes to society. #Equity: Equity refers to being fair and just. A diverse world unfortunately doesn’t always mean an equitable world, but amplifying and incorporating the diverse talents, contributions, and ideas of those around us can help make the world a more fair and just place to live. #Inclusion: Inclusion involves embracing and implementing the diverse ideas, gifts, talents, and contributions of those around us. It’s not enough to simply surround ourselves with diverse individuals. We must also be inclusive of all perspectives—not just the ideas and contributions of a select few. Reflections on my LGBTQIA+ Empowerment Programme & London Pride - PART 1 So far in this programme, I have attended events with the underlying theme of empowerment, such as a human rights forum and a queering academia conference, and there is much more to come. I have learnt so much about queer history and the current affairs affecting the queer community globally. As heavy as it is to hear it talked about, I want to know where rights are being taken away and where progression is being hindered. I am also grateful to hear about the small wins, seeing success stories for myself, and enjoying queer joy and the celebration of this community’s strength, perseverance and hope for the future. We all feel the weight of the endless issues many queer people are forced to face, but it is lighter when we carry it together. Queer joy for many is a necessity to enjoy life while fighting uphill battles, and experiencing losses and trauma that come from homophobia & transphobia (and misogyny, racism & xenophobia that accompanies them). Regardless of some of the commercial motivations (which do NOT define my experience and the many others who feel they need to celebrate and at least acknowledge and bring attention to Pride; while I am aware of pink washing, I will not allow corporations to deter me from enjoying Pride month for what it stands for within the queer community, taking the opportunities for queer-based activism, and holding people & companies accountable all year-round), Pride Month has given these issues platforms to those raising awareness and taking action, and has brought with it visibility incomparable to the rest of the year, and I am thankful for that and the subsequent positive impact. And I welcome reminders of all of these things I need to work on and understand how I can be a better ally. I appreciate the education that will come about each Pride month as long as you are paying attention to the people who are using their voices. I want to work on using my privilege. I want to use my voice and I am trying, and is very much a working progress as I try to balance a lot in my life, but I see the impact others have and I know it’s possible to find it and use it.
