IMPORTANT NEWS - Ms. Michal Freedhoff, assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention under President Joe Biden's US EPA PFAS regulatory team informed a record turnout of 557 SEMI participants today exactly what the new reporting requirements are for 10-12,000 PFAS compounds across in the manufacturing and chemical industry in the US. I left the meeting today wondering if this could possibly be the largest regulatory action for the chemical and manufacturing industry in the history of the Toxic Substances Control Act and to unleash the largest lab testing budgets in the history of the chemical industry, the largest EHS hiring spree in US history, and the largest litigation docket the US courts have ever tried to schedule? Ms. Freedhoff is best known for fighting the Trump administration and later going to work for the Biden administration to stop the spread of a class of toxics known as “forever chemicals.” So named because they don’t break down in the environment over time, these per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (or PFAS) have been used for decades to repel liquids in products such as food packaging and nonstick pans. The chemicals have also found their way into most Americans’ blood. In higher concentrations, they’ve been associated with an array of health problems, including several cancers, autoimmune disorders and fertility challenges. As a Senate staffer, Freedhoff chastised the Trump EPA for dragging its feet on regulating PFAS and then helped draft the legislation that forced the agency to take action, and that success was on full display today. Freedhoff has successfully strengthened the 2016 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) through amendments bolstering the agency’s authority to order chemical manufacturers to pay for testing regarding the effects of their products. After those tests are completed - there are now reporting requirements that will put the levels of PFAS found in ALL products manufactured in the US on full display for workers, the public, consumers, and lawyers to see. #PFASREGULATIONS #CLEANWATER #WATERPOLLUTIONPREVENTION SEMI

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s recent announcement of new limits (4-10 ppt) for six PFAS in drinking water is a big step in protecting public health and ensuring clean drinking water for millions of Americans. While meeting these new limits poses a formidable challenge, detecting #PFAS at such low levels is equally daunting task. Current lab-based methods are costly, slow, and impractical for real-time monitoring, especially in field settings. Addressing both the #removal and #detection challenges of #PFAS contamination is crucial for safeguarding public health and clean water access. With the #EPA's commitment of $1B for testing and treatment technologies, there is a tremendous opportunity for startups to develop cost-effective, sensitive #PFAS sensing and removal technologies suitable for field use. #CleanWater #EnvironmentalHealth #PFASDetection #PFASRemoval #EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken two major steps to tackle PFAS contamination: issuing final National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and announcing a final rule designating two widely used PFAS chemicals as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). These actions follow from EPA’s “PFAS Strategic Roadmap,” which sets out EPA’s “whole-of-agency” approach to addressing PFAS. Our Environmental / ESG team outlines these actions, the new drinking water standards, compliance obligations, and anticipated industry impacts, and provides key takeaways companies should consider as they seek to assess, manage, and mitigate their PFAS-related exposure. I recently posted about the USEPA's new TSCA #PFAS reporting rule. Today, I am posting about USEPA's announcement of another final rule under EPCRA that adds #PFAS subject to Toxics Release Inventory #TRI reporting to the list of ‘chemicals of special concern’, thus eliminating the de minimis exemption as well as the option to report using the abbreviated Form A. My colleague, Haley Ahlers, discusses the implications of this new rule that could also apply to more businesses than many might think. I'm speaking today about opportunities for PFAS replacement at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) PFAS TSCA workshop today. This comes out of the Executive Office of the President Office of Science and Technology Policy PFAS Report to Congress. Even though the Report is only about a year old, there has been a lot of work since it came out to identify where PFAS are used and which uses may be critical or essential. Without understanding these factors, identifying alternatives remains challenging. There is a lot more research to do in this space! #pfas #sustainablechemistry #greenchemistry
