Lumos Selected as Broadband Partner for Borderless Classroom Pilot In June 2023, TDI sought proposals for a pilot program to bring broadband service with minimum speeds of 100 Mbps x 20 Mbps and educational network access to students in several pilot schools by the fall of 2023. The program will initially cover three schools in High Point, NC, through the end of the 2026 school year but has the potential to reach an additional 30,000 students who do not have access to an adequate and affordable in-home broadband network. Lumos’ proposal of its 500 Mbps x 500 Mbps service, Total Home Wi-Fi, and dual SSID support for the school system’s educational network greatly exceeded the speed requirements. After a competitive process, TDI awarded Lumos the opportunity to provide the pilot services to students. The program secured funding through two grants totaling approximately $3.5 million and will provide high-speed internet service to certain student households for three school years. https://lnkd.in/gJ8g8nNm -- #ftth #fibertothehome #education #infrastructure #fiberoptic #broadband #network

The U.S. Department of Education wants education leaders to address disparities limiting ed tech’s potential to transform teaching and learning, according to its newly revised 2024 National Educational Technology Plan. The plan identifies three persistent ed tech barriers to equity that it says need to be addressed: Digital use divide: The inequitable implementation in how students use technology. For instance, some students are asked to actively use technology in the classroom, while others use ed tech to passively complete assignments. Digital design divide: Inequitable access to professional learning for teachers in understanding and designing lesson plans that harness ed tech. Digital access divide: Inequitable access to broadband connectivity, devices and digital content. This also includes equitable accessibility, as well as access to lessons in digital health, safety and citizenship skills. https://tech.ed.gov/netp/ 2024 National Educational Technology Plan link above.

#Digitalaccessibility is interpreted in many ways within the UK Education Sector. For many of us, when we think of digital accessibility we may think of laptops in a classroom. Research from Digital Poverty Alliance shows that a worrying 26% of young people do not have access to a laptop or similar device. This is an important reality to face. For many of those affected, digital accessibility is about so much more than hardware. For EAL, SEND students, and their parents the tools which help them to engage with, and enjoy learning, are often barred behind a lack of resources. Digital tools that can help school leaders and pupils unlock the education they deserve are available to use. It’s just about knowing where to look. Here are some Google tools that are readily available for classroom leaders to make their lessons more accessible. #GoogleforEducation #WorkspaceforEducation #ChromeforEducation Oli Trussell Alexander Warran Anna Artemyeva

Vice President of Government Relations at NACS
2moCable, you do realize that you support an effort to ban institutions from providing programs like this right? ED regulations you have lobbied for cover laptops provided to students just like this program. Advocates for ED's draft regulations totally undermine scaling up OER and increasing student equitable access. Oh and another thing about this program, if ED's regulations go through the way you support them, the students would be required to pay sales taxes on the rented laptops. They would no longer be exempt in Illinois. Students would have to pay 10.75% sales taxes on the laptops rented to them. Same thing will happen to the textbook rental fee programs in Southern and Eastern Illinois university. Eastern's program was established in 1899.
