Presenting to you 1st Runners Up HD4A Youth in Agribusiness Innovators' Challenge 2023, Judy Mwende Mutunga, a dedicated Food Scientist. She's not just a specialist in food production and nutrition; she's the visionary Founder and CEO of Ustawi Foods. Driven by innovation, her company crafts organic composite flour from indigenous food crops like amaranth, pumpkin, sorghum, and millet, that sequesters them in the food market. Ustawi Foods' innovative solutions targets lactating mothers who form a large customer base. The flour has nutrition benefits benefits on increasing breast milk production. Their goal is to improve taste of these indigenous foods to increase consumption and acceptability, more so reaching to lactating mothers in vulnerable communities in ASAL such as Isiolo and Baringo. Other than flour they also produce peanuts and honey that are equaly important in our diets. Setting The Course For The Future Of Nutrition #NextGen Proteins Conference, Bremerhaven We have recently exceeded the magical limit of 8 billion inhabitants on this planet. And there will probably be far more than 10 billion people in 2050. 5.5 million citizens currently live in the metropolitan region of my hometown of Hamburg. How many will we be in 2050? 8 million? 9 million citizens? And what does that mean for us? Let's divide the future into three major challenges that show the bigger picture at the end of the day. Can we save our environment and climate in order to survive? If so will there be enough jobs and affordable housing? And how are we supposed to feed this large number of people? Business as usual? Definetly not! At least the factory farming model has reached its expiration date. If we want to feed everyone on the planet in the future, we can no longer afford to waste plant-based foods as animal feed. And we must ensure that the climate continues to support growing plant-based foods. At the NextGen Proteins conference in Bremerhaven last week we discussed the future of nutrition and the challenges that lie ahead. We have discussed many new approaches to a healthy diet, with a view to providing vital proteins without resorting to meat. We were able to gain a lot of new insights through the lectures of our friends from all over Europe. Even though I have always had mixed feelings about these challenges, I now have the feeling that we can get these problems under control together. This conference showed that research and industry can work together on a common platform, inspire each other and thus find solutions together. And more importantly - that they already do it too. With #regenerativeagriculture becoming such a trend, it is important to understand the impact it has on consumer habits and how consumers can choose accordingly their purchases, avoiding greenwashing whilst realizing the benefits of it. Nutrient Density Alliance just published its white paper, guiding brands seeking to respond to the demand for #regenerative products that deliver superior nutrition. In the words of Tina Owens, Managing Director of Nutrient Density Alliance, “There is tremendous consumer demand right now for products that deliver quality nutrition. Brands leveraging regenerative agriculture have a prime opportunity to highlight those better nutrition outcomes, but uncertainty around exactly how to develop and market legitimate nutrient density claims has left much of that potential untapped. 🇮🇹 Imagine feasting on chicken meat that was once just a feather. A team at the University of Trento is making it a reality. The cells are extracted from feathers obtained by petting the chick, and these cells can be grown successfully for months, yielding tens of millions of cells from a few initial ones. The first phase of the project financed by the Italian Save the Chickens Foundation has been completed, successfully identifying feather types and optimal conditions for obtaining and growing chicken cells. The ultimate goal is to develop chicken cell lines suitable for cultured meat production, with plans to continue with subsequent project phases.
