Involving your hiring managers or current employees in your recruitment process is a game-changer for candidate response rates. 55% of GenZ candidates prefer to hear from a current employee before replying to a recruiter and are more likely to apply thereafter. 3. Virtual career fairs are critical to attract students of color; in fact, the majority of virtual career fair attendees (65% in Spring 2023) are students from underrepresented groups. 4. Recruiting from a diverse range of colleges can be the difference between hitting or not hitting your DEI goals. Last week, I had the privilege of meeting with a campus recruiter who was eager to learn how to connect more effectively with students. It's exciting to see companies take time to understand and engage with potential recruits on a deeper level. Here are 4 things I shared with the recruiter: 1. Focus on Building Relationships: 🌟 In a world where personal connections matter, it's crucial to foster genuine relationships. Rather than simply pitching job opportunities, recruiters should invest in getting to know students– their dreams, ambitions, and even the challenges they face. Building trust and rapport makes a difference. 2. Meet Students Where They're At: 📍 Students are unique with their own preferences and platforms. Recruiters should embrace various communication channels – from social media and virtual events to in-person interactions. By being present where students are, recruiters can create more organic and relatable connections. 3. See Students as Whole People: 👐 Students are more than just a résumé or 3-minute elevator pitch. I encourage recruiters to get to know students' passions, interests, and values. Treating students as multidimensional individuals showcases a commitment to their growth as potential employees and well-rounded individuals. 4. Show Up with Authenticity: 🧡 Last, but not least: show up! Be present, engaged, and authentic. Whether it's at career fairs, workshops, or online events, showing up demonstrates a genuine interest in our students' journey. Recruitment is a two-way street where both parties can learn and connect. I hope more companies continue to embrace these principles to create meaningful connections with students.
