Friday food for thought: As I continue my search for my next opportunity, I'm grateful for the valuable feedback and insights I've received from the brands and individuals I've been connecting with. One interesting observation I've made is the presence of distinct silos in sports marketing that house brands, partners, and activations. It's fascinating to witness the different approaches and strategies employed by each silo. My experience in all three phases of bringing a brand strategy to life through great sports sponsorship has helped me discover one of my key strengths. Empathy is crucial in any great relationship, whether personal or professional. Understanding your partner's internal and external pressures can help you find even better ways to align your partnership in a frictionless manner, making true partners. This was the moment my life changed. Here's the full story. In 2021 I terribly injured my arm playing baseball. • Tendinitis & ligament damage all over my shoulder. • I completely missed my junior year of baseball. • I couldn't throw past 75mph as a senior. I was devastated but I knew my acceptance at FIU represented a NEW opportunity for me. All I wanted was a new opportunity, A new opportunity to prove myself, and my new opportunity was my education. Now, in 2024 I have a new opportunity. I've been working at Nike for sixteen years. This summer, I am reflecting back on what I have learned and sharing in the hope that it helps you on your path. Learning Three: Success is not what you know.  It’s about how eager you are to learn. My first job at Nike was such a blessing. Not just because it got me there, which at the time was my goal… but because of where and who I would be working with. My role was to help us determine how Nike Basketball came to life digitally ahead of the Beijing Olympics.  I’d never been to China (or even Asia) before that moment, and knew very little about that consumer or how they connected. There was so much to learn, and that meant there was so big of a chance for me to grow. I didn't know if I would 'make it', but I knew deep down that I would be so much better for trying. As I would soon learn, my teammates in Asia-Pacific felt the same way - so eager to learn, together. Years later when I reflect I see this more clearly, and as a part of a much bigger picture.  For anyone who is on the journey I was on, wondering what it takes to get to Nike.... lean into learning. Your love for learning is what separates you. Leaders are not those who go in certain with the best answers but, rather, the ones who go in curious with the best questions. My first experience paved the way for so many others for me on my journey. I’m never afraid to enter an unfamiliar landscape because I recognize that is exactly where I want to be. Learning. If I could go back, I would make sure that I always prioritized the time to learn.  It's easy to lose sight of what you are learning in the chaos of the day. Feel like Nike’s marketing approach can show the HUGE brand opportunity on LinkedIn for any company focused on “career advancement”…   Think about it...Nike isn’t buying ads in sports stadiums for the CPM. They’re buying the “mindset” of every person in that environment, and attaching the Nike brand to it. Over time, their brand becomes synonymous with that “mindset”...and the synergy between “Nike and Sports” has too much LONG-TERM value to focus too much on short-term CPM.   I believe that same opportunity is now on LinkedIn for any college, university and workforce development company out there…   LinkedIn has grown to 1 billion members and most use the platform to do exactly that…to forward their career. What if your brand owned that career advancement “mindset”…on the world’s largest platform used for advancing careers?   That’s the kind of value only a LONG-TERM marketer will find early enough to take full advantage. #brandmarketing #linkedinads #socialmediamarketing #marketing #advertising
