Independent Systems Operators operate the energy transmission system independently of, and foster competition for electricity generation among, wholesale market participants. ISOs were created to facilitate competitive wholesale electric markets.

Today batteries look set to earn their highest daily revenue since July, but why has this happened? Using Plotter, you can see how wholesale spreads are higher today than in previous days, due to especially low prices during off-peak periods. This has caused Dynamic Containment High prices to rise to over £6/MW/h during those periods. This is because batteries could import energy from the wholesale market cheaply during off-peak periods, so they demand higher prices for Dynamic Containment High. This service has the biggest impact on the Modo Energy BESS Index, as nearly half of all batteries that make up the index provide it. This has caused the increase in frequency response revenues we've seen this morning ⚡

Excellent summary of the current wholesale marketplace. Reliability has to be balanced with price and emissions.
The region’s wholesale electricity marketplace is securing reliable electricity at competitive prices and helping usher in a cleaner, greener grid. Check out our New England Power Grid 2023–2024 Profile here: https://lnkd.in/eWqs_ByN

The wholesale market, the spot market, bid stacks, merit order... what does it all mean?? The second part of our series explaining the National Electricity Market is now live - we have a crack at describing how the wholesale market works.

This is the second part in a series where we try explaining the National Electricity Market. This post looks at the central feature of the NEM - the wholesale market. We've explained what it is and how it works simple terms and managed to almost entirely avoid maths.

The OP below has a good sub/thread discussion including the author Alex Leemon and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)’s Greg Williams … in a response to one of the later’s comments I wrote the following … which deserves imho to lead it’s own discussion (and also so I don’t lose it ; ) Greg Williams the challenge for AEMO (and most SOs I suspect) is they “exclusively” focus on “balance at dispatch” — the idea of temporally shifting to load to modify future dispatch intervals is an anathema to them (and terrifying to existing “supply side only control (balancing)” businesses. Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) have got very good, in fact very VERY good, at forecasting “WILD” (unmanaged) demand! That a huge part of that expertise could be at “risk” of Demand Management modifying apparent demand probably doesn’t sit well with them. However their charter is to deliver the NEO “lowest community cost of energy”. #DSM will (indisputably) deliver Energy Cost Efficiency, DNSPs will meet their regulatory objectives though facilitating that, lower cost and greater efficiency will follow. Why AEMO is getting in the way of this eludes me, why the AEMC and AER and not up in arms frustrates me. However …. there’s a shortage of voices of/for the “savers” - the Pearcey Foundation’s Australia 4.0 did a great job of highlighting this, and rallying ICT to the task, and supporting AEMC and AER to address these issues. I’d like to see AEMO on the right side of these challenges… but that might be naive! @EIAgov - #NaturalGas prices are the most important driver of wholesale #electricity prices because: 1. It is often the highest-cost (marginal) fuel dispatched for power generation 2. Many U.S. wholesale electricity markets set prices at the marginal cost #energy #natgas #power

Great news for #DSR, electricity demand flexibility providers, and consumers in Britain. Ofgem has today approved Balancing and Settlement Code Modification P415. This change will allow independent aggregators (known as Virtual Lead Parties) to trade in the wholesale power market from November 2024. It's an important breakthrough as currently they can only offer services in the Balancing Mechanism. We worked with Paul Troughton from Virtual Lead Party, Enel X to develop P415. It is one of a number of changes to the BSC which Elexon has delivered to support aggregators and demand side response providers. These steps are are important for #Netzero, the #energytransition and smarter markets. They create more opportunities for flexibility to be used in solving supply and demand constraints. Retail energy providers offer energy users options for purchasing power wholesale from generating facilities. REPs don't generate power themselves; instead, they purchase it in bulk from generators and resell it to end consumers. #retailenergyproviders

Price shifting and cost avoidance has been the main strategy of residential batteries which are shifting toward VPP to provide additional specialized services, interesting to see wholesale batteries experiencing an inverse evolution https://lnkd.in/eSxzSsXY
