“Although the new deal will help with exposure, revenue, and marketing, it also shortchanges the Kaplan report’s estimated value of the women’s tournament by over $15 million on the low end. Sure, it’s an improvement–in the previous package, the women’s basketball championship was part of another package that included 29 championships broadcast on ESPN, and the package as a whole was valued at $34 million total. But the Kaplan report suggests that the actual valuation for the women’s March Madness tournament alone “is worth much more—between $81 and $112 million annually in 2025.” In other words, the newest contact could be undervaluing the women’s tournament by nearly $50 million annually.” In my latest for Awful Announcing, I discuss how ESPN’s latest $920 million college sports package still manages to under-resource women’s sports based on projections from 2021:
The new NCAA media deal with ESPN greatly undervalues what the women's basketball tournament was estimated to get on the open market, says Dr. Katie Lever. #sportsmedia #womenssports #espn #ncaa #womensbasketball #mediarights

This is it! A new day for women’s sports. 💪🏽 “Television viewership actually reflected inequalities in promotion and internal attention given to the men’s and women’s tournaments, not their inherent values.” You think? It’s never been about inherent value, only about equitable opportunities and support. NIL and social media have provided the platforms for these phenomenal athletes to show their value, through sponsor ROIs and personal branding and influence - to wider audiences than ever before. Now the next correction needs to be in how the NCAA rewards these Final Four teams. Men’s teams will take $10M each. Guess how much the women’s teams make for their university in 2024? ZERO. Progress is under way there too. The NCAA is evolving, as it must. #womenssports #sportsbusiness #sports #equity #collegesports

Today is National Girls & Women in Sports Day! 💪🏼 I love seeing the incredible achievements that young women have accomplished lately in the sports world. Here are just a few examples: 🏐 University of Texas women’s volleyball team winning the National Championship 2 YEARS IN A ROW - and University of Nebraska volleyball with a global record in televised attendance for a women’s event. 🏐 The brand new USA Professional Volleyball League gives college girls the opportunity to play both state-side and internationally. The first game of the season had 11,000+ attendees! 💵 NIL Deals in College, allowing athletes to earn money without sacrificing time away from their sport. Not all athletes get full scholarships! ⚽️ The massive new women’s soccer stadium opening in Kansas City in 2025. 🏈 And here in Texas, we’ve got high school girls teams for flag football (even wrestling!). How great is it that this could continue to grow… like it or not, Taylor Swifts’ NFL exposure during Chief’s games encourages more young women to watch the sport! As a former collegiate athlete, 100% I agree that being an athlete translates to professional success 💪🏼👏🏼 What other examples of success do you have? #womeninbusiness #womeninsales

Flag football is becoming a powerful platform for female athletes, fostering a sense of community, providing scholarship opportunities, and now offering a potential pathway to the Olympics. The non-contact game has gained significant popularity, with dedicated girls' teams and leagues emerging globally. Eight states have officially recognized girls' flag football as a high school varsity sport, with more initiating pilot programs. Former University of Houston basketball player Jo Overstreet expresses the significance of the opportunity, saying, "This is so big for women to be able to say, 'I have a dream to play football' — and to actually know that opportunity is really there." The momentum behind flag football's rise is evident as it opens doors for women in sports. Highlighting a few flag football superstars: 1.Santia Deck: Known for her rugby and Legends Football League (LFL) career, Deck made history by signing the first professional full-tackle football contract with the Women's Football League Association (WFLA). 2. Diana Flores:A key member of the Mexican national team since 2014, Flores showcased exceptional skills as a quarterback, contributing to Mexico's gold medal win at the World Games 2022. 3. Kilolo Westerlund: A standout player at Liberty High School, Westerlund has achieved international success with the U.S. National Football Team, earning two championship titles. As flag football gains prominence, these athletes are breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of female football players. I was dropping my kids off at school today and heard two elementary school boys arguing about basketball- specifically if Caitlin Clark is better than LeBron James. It was a lively debate. I know that this is because of the media coverage she has been getting- something that women's sports have struggled with historically. This kind of representation in the media is critical to keep girls in the game. Sports can be a game changer for so many reasons: 1. Empowerment: Sports build confidence and empower women to challenge societal norms and stereotypes. 2. Leadership Skills: Sports help women develop leadership abilities through teamwork and decision-making. 3. Health and Well-being: Sports promote physical fitness and overall well-being, leading to healthier futures. 4. Networking: Sports provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, creating valuable networks. 5. Breaking Barriers: Women's involvement in sports breaks down gender barriers and opens doors to new opportunities. Congrats to Caitlin Clark and to the droves of girls who will follow behind her after seeing what she can do.
