The discussion revolved around the crucial role of usable farmland in UK fresh food production, juxtaposed with the government's allowance of its diversion for alternative uses such as housing, solar farms, and industrial estates. Acknowledging the importance of safeguarding farmland for food production, particularly in light of weather uncertainties impacting crop yields and increasing instances of farms being incentivized not to produce food, it was emphasized that failing to protect high-grade farmland could result in a significant decline in domestic food production. The meeting participants expressed concerns over potential food shortages and the broader ramifications of a diminishing farming industry. However, amidst these concerns, there were positive highlights discussed during the meeting: DEFRA's Initiatives: The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has taken commendable steps towards bolstering food security and supporting farmers. The introduction of a cap on the amount of land allocated to Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) actions addresses concerns about land diversion, striking a balance between environmental conservation and agricultural productivity. Priority on Food Security: DEFRA's unwavering commitment to securing the country's food supply was recognized as a positive move. Exciting news! The Dutch Senate has given a resounding yes to exempt plant-based alternatives to milk from the “lemonade tax”. The proposed tax hike of 196% on plant-based alternatives to milk has been criticized for its illogical nature, unfairly disadvantaging consumers who choose oat drinks over milk (as milk is exempt from the consumption tax). In response to this, the Senate has taken a clear stand in favor of plant-based consumers. Firstly, they voted to defer the tax increase by a year. Furthermore, they supported a motion to exempt plant-based milk alternatives from the consumption tax. I am extremely pleased to see politicians listening to all the voices of over 54,000 people signing the petition alongside several NGOs and companies strongly opposing this distorting tax. While we celebrate this, urgent changes are needed in existing legislation to level the playing field. Now, we expect State Secretary Marnix van Rij to come with a solution to retroactively exempt all plant-based alternatives to milk. The Corporate Affairs Manager, Joy Egolum, expressed the company's willingness to explore the incentives offered, including tax holidays. However, Egolum highlighted challenges with immediate resumption, citing the time-consuming nature of routine maintenance. Dr. Raymond Asemakaha of Benue Investment and Property Company Limited urged the brewery to resume operations promptly, emphasizing the state's conducive business environment and available resources like sorghum and manpower. Asemakaha noted the potential economic benefits of local production, aiming to curb capital flight and empower local farmers. The government's efforts include streamlining business processes with a one-stop shop. The Senate in the Netherlands has just given a resounding YES to exempt plant-based alternatives to milk from the consumption tax. E-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e! This shows that lawmakers are listening to Misty E. Mason and the voices of over 54,000 people, along with NGOs and companies who signed her petition to stop the consumption tax on plant-based drinks. E-e-e-e-e-e-e-e! And demonstrates a strong opposition to taxing plant-based alternatives with a generally lower climate impact than milk. While we celebrate this win, change is still needed in existing legislation to level the playing field. The State secretary has responded speedily committing to come back with a proposal during the first quarter of 2024 recognizing that plant-based alternatives should be exempt.
