Deal Structuring Nerd | Corporate Lawyer + Advisor at Frank Law + Advisory | SME Investor at Brolly Capital
Last week I listened to a terrific podcast by Guy Raz. Guy Raz interviewed Roger Martin exploring the concept of integrated thinking. It is a great listen if you are leading teams or if you are being lead. Some key takeaways: - If you lead teams you need to embrace experimentation. - Corporates need to adapt to experimentation informed thinking rather than statistical forecasts. - Hypothesis, experimentation, results, feedback, assessment and determination is a cycle that should be embraced. More and more thought and money should be spent thinking through how validate or invalidate hypothesis rather than looking at the past and assuming the same results. If you run a business looking to innovate with teams, this is a must listen. https://lnkd.in/gN6HFe9f #corporatelaw #corporateadvisory #strategy #growth

Very good summary from ReD Associates on their podcast with Roger Martin. Previously I shared a short summary of the podcast as it had several great takeaways. The podcast plus this summary should be part of every strategy session as a pre-read that can help leaders better understand their strategy and customer success. More importantly, it can help business leaders understand the difference between (i) a strategy and a business plan, and (ii) customers buying your product/services (one of many choices in the market place) vs the customers feeling compelled to buy from you.
Looking for informed, digestible perspectives on strategy? You can now find our four-part article series "Strategy In 1,000 Words" with Roger Martin all in one place. Over the past couple of months, we've been collaborating with world-leading strategic thinker Roger Martin to share our perspective on the practice of strategy today, how it is often misunderstood, and where we think the discipline should be heading. In the collected PDF below, Roger – alongside ReD partners Iago Noguer Storgaard and Filip Lau – discusses why strategy is becoming a lost art, how to find that "secret sauce" of strategy, why traditional consulting firms no longer prioritise creating strategy concepts, and how to build strategies at a human scale. Roger also tells us why "a philosopher is as likely to be good at strategy as a business trained person" and how "the role of creativity in strategy creation is essential." Don't forget the flick to the back page where you can find a QR code to listen to an edited version of this conversation as a podcast. And stay tuned for more content on strategy coming soon. #strategy #socialsciences #consulting

We invite you to listen to the latest episode of the Capital H podcast, hosted by John Guziak, Deloitte's Human Capital leader. 🎙🎧 This time John’s guest is Dr. Marta Dapena-Baron, the author of the bestseller "Big Picture Strategy. The Six Choices That Will Transform Your Business”. John and his guest discuss the critical choices that leaders must make to define a marketing strategy and to align their teams to be able to execute on it. They refer to the "Big Picture Strategy” book, in which the author presents a system of six practical choices that articulate exactly how to launch and grow brands. According to a podcast guest: 🟢 Client-centric approach in marketing seems to be crucial regardless of the adopted growth path. In order to grow, you need to win customers and become their preferred choice, which is a substantial challenge for many C-suites today. 🟢 The recipe for success is to develop a business model capable of delivering specific value based on specific customers, using an action plan and following a bottom-up approach to build an effective strategy. 🟢 Looking at customers from a customer perspective is crucial. “Have an open mind, try to understand what your customers try to achieve and how they see the world. Only then you can learn the values your customers pursue and use them as your brand differentiator.” If you want to learn some more interesting concepts? “𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐈 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲…. …𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠!” 😉 There are no leaders saying that, of course. And you may consider this a harsh critique, so be it… What if, instead, you considered this a challenge, out of deep respect for leaders tasked with the lives and livelihoods of thousands? Proclaiming to lead and manage your business differently will likely yield more interested job candidates, in the short term. 𝐈𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐰𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 (𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳). Perhaps you can do this without external eyes, ears, and heart. Perhaps you don’t desire to do so, alone. Let me be real (horrible sales pitch, I know!): 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐧, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐲, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬…. 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥. Find yourself a partner who accepts who, supports you, does not judge you AND, out of deep respect, will step into discomfort with you, will offer questions that require courage (both to ask and to answer). And enjoy the discomfort! Or don’t… 😉 I expect to have a CEO partnership opening in August. Let me know if you’d like to experience working together.
