That long-term, collective growth is far more enriching than any short-term wins.” Everlane's journey since its launch in 2011 reflects the evolution of the e-commerce industry, from reliance on bespoke tech stacks to the emergence of catalysts like Instagram and Shopify, democratizing access to online retail. 🛡️Guerilla Warfare in the DTC Space: Michael likened the current e-commerce landscape to a form of guerilla warfare, characterized by intense competition fueled by myriad growth channels, rising market saturation, and disruptive industry players. Working in silos has become prohibitive to long-term value creation. 🤝The Value of Partnerships: Michael underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in combating soaring customer acquisition costs (CAC) and driving long-term growth. Platforms like Disco facilitate seamless collaboration, enabling brands to leverage collective customer data to acquire the most relevant, new customers from one another. 👨💻 Harnessing Data Insights: Leveraging customer insights and data-driven strategies is essential for optimizing acquisition and retention efforts. By understanding customer behavior beyond their brand bubble, companies can refine marketing campaigns and product development initiatives for greater efficacy. It's an interesting time in retail right now. There's a lot of challenges DTC startups are facing, from inflation to rising CAC to increased competition, that have been ongoing for the last two years, but also show signs of abating. I'm not seeing many startups make big, sweeping changes in response to these challenges, but rather, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes tweaking of marketing strategies. It's subtle, but the big challenge a lot of companies face right now is: it is harder than ever to convince people to buy from your brand compared to all of your competitors. And, to convince them to buy right now instead of say, 6 to 12 months. So, a lot of companies are spending more time behind the scenes looking for creative ways to reach new customers, and continuously honing their brand messaging. As Brian Berger put it to me: "For consumers, the novelty of discovering a new brand online, the novelty of somebody positioning a product as a better mousetrap, or something better than what they’re traditionally used to — all of that is, like, priced in now. Consumers have been hearing those kinds of messages for a long, long time." So, DTC brands can no longer rest on their laurels. "Energy Flows where Focus Goes … and our Focus is on the Fundamentals, Our Brands, and Delivering Profitable Growth."  And it’s working! This was what I shared during our recent quarterly all-hands meeting.  It was awesome to get hundreds of Spreetailers all together live, and hundreds more joining the livestream to celebrate an awesome start to 2024!!! I covered “Where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going.” Here’s a recap for our Brand Partners & Team Members who couldn’t make it: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 We’re maniacally focusing on the fundamentals of ecommerce, for ourselves and for our brands - and it’s 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴!   - Our average Brand is up 30%+ in Q1 We’ve rolled out a new SKU flywheel model and a brand workflow engine to ensure we’re doing what we say and fulfilling our brand promise. Our brand partners are seeing the benefits in higher quality content, better listing liveliness, better pricing, promotions, & advertising decisions working together, and faster ship speeds across all regions.   - Our Brand NPS is up 30%+ as well Brands are giving us positive feedback around the transparency, consistency, care, follow-through, and the positive impact it’s having on their business.   - We’re Driving Brand Growth to a new level. We unveiled a new service that allows more Brands to leverage what we do best, Heavy & Bulky Fulfillment, with what they do best.  Previously we only offered one model of working with us.  And we’re seeing 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 growth here.    𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗻 We’ve enjoyed high highs, and low-lows.  The past five years have been unique in the ecommerce space. Navigating the Covid whipsaw had hard moments. But we made strategically sound decisions and have come through it stronger.    𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 The future at Spreetail looks bright. I'm excited about the path we're going down, the team we have in place, the things we're working on, and the results we continue to drive for brands. Have you ever wondered how some D2C brands are highly successful and yet completely bootstrapped. They follow a process called SPRINT. And it works like this: S → service P → profit R → reinvest I → innovate N → nano test T → Take to market Here's what it looks like in action. You start with a product. Whatever it is you choose, begin by offering it as a made by you/improved by you product. If done right, you should be seeing a profit immediately. That's a good thing. But don't start living large just yet. You need to plow that money back into your business. Then comes the innovation. Research, productization, scalability. Whatever you gotta do to get better. You now have the cash to do it. So make it happen. Next comes the testing. Small tests. That's why I call them nano tests. Come up with the minimum viable concept to test your new products with customers. Do this over and over again. Finally, when you're good and ready, take it to market. And that's how you SPRINT. This formula has been used for centuries. It's how real businesses are built every day. You just need to start somewhere with the Product. 💨 Wow, May was a sure a buzy month, both handling the hand overs at J.LINDEBERG, and at the same time prepping for my new journey with my Ecom and Brand advising agency ACCEXE AB. +squeezed in a stop over at Vervaunt ´s "PULSE" conference in London. 1300 attandees, ca 1000 of them retailers. 💵 💶 💷 Interesting to dial in on the UK scene in comparison to the Scandi one.. Very performance and numbers driven on a very competitive market, still very open and curious about testing new ways. Also very UK focused and growing globally means US, where maybe the scandi one goes for DE-FR etc first(although also BIG focus on US recently..) 💻 Apperently huge interest in "new" platforms Shopify Centra and SCAYLE Commerce Engine from also midcap/enterprise sized ecoms. Shift continues in movements B2B>DTC and DTC>B2B. 💫 Lots of talks about Brand Brand Brand, seing shift in spend in that as anyway short term ROAS not the same religion anymore. ♻ Not so much talks about sustainablitly as a thing, however lots of actions already trying outs difrent set ups for circular re-commerce. -Great to see Vidar Trojenborg from ASKET on stage(and getting a lot of attention in posts this week after) leading the way in transperancy and successfull business and sustainablity model at core. 🗣 So much experience and sharp people on the talks. I also did a 30 min session about product focus and making search and merchandising a priority(which myself know somtimes not gets the full attention on more "brandy" site builds..). Wonderfull moderated by Mairaid Harte at Klevu Even got some Q&A in at the end wich I always like. 🤝 Thanks to Paul Rogers for inviting me and Rachel Tonner to put me in the spotlight. Big up to the whole VERVAUNT team for pulling of such a big and packed event, was indeed worth the trip. Glad to meet both some old and a lot of new in the ecom universe. I strongly encourage(if they let the event grow) more fellow etailers to go next year. Hope to visit London soon again. A true driver in European Ecom.
