Partner @Fulfillment IQ | Podcast creator 🎙️ eCom Logistics Podcast | Top Retail Expert | Investor In Early Stage Logistics Companies
In the startup world, the excitement of receiving a term sheet often overshadows a critical aspect of scaling your business. 👉 Selecting the right investor. But what should startups really focus on when selecting their investors? During a recent discussion with Kelly Perdew, Managing General Partner, Moonshots Capital, he highlighted a key point. Self-awareness is crucial for a founder. Startups need to understand their gaps – be it in marketing, strategy, or operations. A good investor partnership goes beyond capital and contributes to your startup’s growth and stability. The right partner can accelerate your growth and guide you through the inevitable challenges of startup life. Here's a guide for startups in search of the perfect investor match: ➡ Look for Operational Experience: Early-stage startups benefit immensely from investors with hands-on operational experience. They bring a practical understanding of the business challenges and how to navigate them. ➡ Conduct Thorough Research: Just as investors scrutinize startups, do your homework on them. Go beyond the references they provide. Talk to founders from both successful and unsuccessful ventures to gauge how the investor operates, especially during challenging times. ➡ Understand the Investor’s Role in Downtimes: Success stories make headlines, but the reality of startups is often about persisting through the grind. An investor’s value is truly tested in these downtimes. How they support and guide you here is what sets them apart. ➡ Seek More Than Just Capital: An investor should be a partner – part mentor, part ally. Look for someone who can bring not just funds, but also strategic guidance and a strong network to propel your startup forward. Thanks for the insightful chat, Kelly. Check out his episode on the eCom Logistics Podcast where he shares his insights on: 📌 Importance of synergy and long-term commitment with founders. 📌 The current VC landscape and increased competition. 📌 Challenges and need for leadership in the logistics world. Founder & CEO, PILOT | Let’s Elevate Your Employee Development Together | Empowering Your Staff Through a Balanced, Innovative, Engaging, Metrics-Driven Program for Talent Development, DEI, and Retention
A business's ultimate NSM (no $hit metric) is profitability. Over the years, Startups.com's Startup Therapy Podcast has been a go-to source for inspiration, calibration, and compassion. The co-hosts are multi-time founders of successful (read: profitable 🤑) businesses and they discuss so many of the founder challenges that don't get explored in the media or at conferences. The vast majority of startups are not VC-backed 🚀 "rocket ships," yet those get all of the attention, with the key metrics being funding raised and private market "valuation" (air quotes because of how squishy these numbers can be). Sometimes, it has felt "too small" or not aspirational to have a well-run business with a great product simply, that's a compelling workplace resulting in profit and meaningful cash flow. Yet that's the dream of most business owners and investors, myself included, so it is great to see this post! 👀 https://lnkd.in/e-yKdSG6 #startup #vcfunding #entrepreneur #smallbusinessowner

I love the advice from Craig Walker in this CNBC piece and enjoy it even more knowing it came from a 1970s comedy, The Gumball Rally. “What’s behind you is not important," is a paraphrased line from the movie and speaks to his philosophy as a serial founder and CEO of successful startups, including Inkhouse #client Dialpad. Every company sets out with a mission to solve a big problem. Every company starts out with a laser focus on building a product or service that meets the needs of customers to help solve that problem. As a company grows, it can become really easy to lose that mission and customer focus (keeping your eyes on the road ahead) and instead focusing on a competitor who won a recent deal or had a great quarter. The best way to succeed as a company is to keep your eyes on the road ahead while out executing on customer and product success. In an age where authenticity is paramount, transparency emerges as a non-negotiable for startups striving for success. At Hone Ventures, we've always championed this belief, and our recent article, "The Power of Transparency: A Blueprint for Startup Success," encapsulates this conviction perfectly. The article underscores the transformative role of transparency in fostering trust, credibility, and long-term success. It emphasizes that being open about your journey builds confidence among stakeholders and fosters a culture of accountability, aligning the company ethos internally and externally. But how does this principle translate into our work with startups? At Hone Ventures, we actively encourage our portfolio companies to embrace transparency, whether it's in their product development, business practices, or funding status. We believe this openness paves the way for stronger collaborations, more informed decisions, and, ultimately, more sustainable growth. One quote from the article stands out: "Transparency fosters trust and credibility, which are crucial for startup success." This echoes our sentiment at Hone Ventures. By being transparent, startups can create a solid foundation for success built on honesty, integrity, and mutual respect. But we'd love to hear your thoughts. How has transparency shaped your entrepreneurial journey? How can we collectively elevate its importance in the startup ecosystem? #TransparencyInStartups #HoneVentures #StartupSuccess #AuthenticLeadership

As I reflect on my nearly four-year journey as a startup founder, I’ve come to recognize some pervasive orthodoxies that seem to be more beneficial for venture capitalists than for founders themselves. One such orthodoxy is the explicit bias against solo founders, with VCs often encouraging the formation of teams with a technical co-founder and a business-savvy co-founder. While this advice sounds logical—emphasizing the need for technical expertise to build the product—it often overlooks the fact that an individual founder can successfully build the startup’s product with the help of early employees or through offering equity to team members without necessarily making them co-founders. This approach can be significantly more optimal for founders, allowing them to retain a larger share of the company as it grows and succeeds. From a VC’s perspective, having co-founders mitigates their risk. If one founder leaves, the other remains committed, ensuring continuity. Additionally, having co-founders can give VCs leverage to influence company decisions by potentially playing one founder against the other. After experiencing this dynamic, I’ve realized that much of the advice from VCs serves their interests more than those of the founders. Founders, be cautious—VC advice may not always align with your best interests. #StartupJourney #FounderLife #VCAdvice #Entrepreneurship #SoloFounder #StartupGrowth #Startup #VC
