We have joined forces with other leading industry figures in supporting a crucial initiative led by the Good Homes Alliance, Bioregional, LETI, and the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC). Last week, we put our name to a letter to Michael Gove, expressing our collective concern over current proposals that fall short of the urgent action required to meet our #carbonreduction targets. By uniting with respected architects and consultants, we stand firm in our belief that without significant changes, these measures will not only fail to achieve our immediate carbon goals but also necessitate extensive future #retrofitting to align with necessary carbon reductions. Our commitment to responsible design compels us to advocate for more effective solutions that ensure a greener, more sustainable future. In our latest report for CSA Group, we identify three elements critical for a circular built environment: 1️⃣ adaptive reuse of existing buildings; 2️⃣ adaptive design of new buildings; and 3️⃣ material reuse. The figure below illustrates the relationships among the three elements and how they reinforce one another and disrupt the typical progression of demolishing existing buildings and landfilling their materials. This series of education workshops focused on embodied carbon led by Carbon Wise with support from Vancity and Zero Emissions Innovation Centre’s CLF British Columbia | Carbon Leadership Forum program area are an excellent learning opportunity on an important topic - reducing embodied emission by design! In BC, there are nearly as many emissions in the building sector every year from embodied emissions as from operational emissions - a fact that flies under the radar with so many of our government targets focussing in operational emissions only! Reducing embodied emissions is a strategic, cost-effective and near-term way to accelerate climate action. Check out the learning opportunities below and pls share with your networks! #Natureinthecity was the topic of an excellent panel discussion hosted by Tate + Co Architects last night. It's a topic that on the surface seems like a no brainer, but in reality is far more difficult to achieve with the current metrics of cost/ return being applied. Here is what i took away: 🌲 The amount of land covered by cities will double in the next 30 years - rich, natural urban environments must become the norm - we need to start retrofitting nature into existing urban environments now. 🌳 We don't have time to wait for government legislation to mandate nature as part of development. Responsible development MUST put a greater value on nature and the returns it delivers for people and profits. 👨👩👧👧 Working with existing communities to understand how they CURRENTLY use space sets the baseline of what can be done. It's essential to welcome local people into the process to ensure we are providing spaces that everyone feels a sense of connection to and agency and ownership over. 🌿 Nature is massively undervalued - we need to find new ways to capture and measure the value of including nature in any new/ retrofit development. 🥝 We can save hundreds of millions of pounds in healthcare costs by investing in spaces where people can take time out and be connected to nature - £390 million in 2022 alone, to be precise!! Thank you Jerry Tate for being a great host, and to the panel for your insight: Symon Bacon from British Land, Katharina Erne from HTA Design LLP, Dan James from the Eden Project, Katie Mills from Forest & Family and Sarah Parsons from the London Borough of Waltham Forest. 👏 #natureinthecity #urbanism #development #ethicaldevelopment
