“If we are going to see real development in the world then our best investment is WOMEN!” This quote by Desmond Tutu is one of my favs that emphasizes the importance of empowering and investing in women for the overall development and betterment of society.
I am deeply grateful to be named among the list of the top 100 women in sustainability. As you look across the list, this underscores the vital role women play in steering our world toward a more sustainable, equitable future and the importance of digital + STEM literacy.
If you still need convincing on how women are indispensable in the sustainability discipline, here are 5 reasons why:
1. Inclusive Decision-Making: Studies show that women, when part of decision-making processes, often prioritize the welfare of their communities and the environment including environmental legislation, reflecting a commitment to sustainable governance that considers the needs of all community members, including future generations.
2. Community Focused: In many regions, women are primarily responsible for household and community needs, giving them a unique perspective on resource management and conservation practices. This firsthand experience is crucial in designing and implementing effective, sustainable solutions that benefit entire communities with local context.
3. Innovative Solutions: Women in STEM fields bring critical perspectives that lead to groundbreaking advancements in sustainability. For example, women-led research in agricultural sciences has led to more sustainable farming practices that balance productivity with ecosystem health, showcasing how gender diversity drives innovation.
4. Education and Advocacy: Women have been pivotal in grassroots movements and environmental education, often leading efforts to promote sustainable living and conservation practices. Work in educating young people and communities about sustainability creates a ripple effect that spreads awareness and fosters a culture of responsibility towards the environment.
5. Resilience and Adaptability: Facing gender-specific challenges, women have developed resilience and adaptability—traits that are invaluable in responding to the climate crisis. Women's approaches to problem-solving, often characterized by flexibility and a focus on long-term well-being, are crucial in developing strategies to mitigate and adapt to environmental changes.
⭐️ Women are incredible connectors and collaborators in sustainability.
Being recognized among other women leaders in sustainability is a profound honor and a call to action. It highlights the collective effort required to create a sustainable future and I challenge Glen White that next year the list expand to 300!
Let's continue to support one another and push forward the boundaries of what is possible for our planet and future generations.
