Tens of thousands of standards underpin the real economy, all over the world, in every sector. The real economy needs to transition to net zero in order to avert worsening climate catastrophe. That means we need a standard to help facilitate that transition and leverage the power of quality infrastructure, the international system of verifiable standards, conformity assessment, and assurance that powers our global economy. Last week during #LondonClimateActionWeek, Noelia Garcia Nebra, ISO - International Organization for Standardization Head of Sustainability, announced the start of a process, being led by BSI, to develop the world's first international Net Zero Standard. The standard, based on the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, will be developed over the next 18 months with a view to being launched at COP30 in November 2025, and is designed to provide a global solution to guide organizations as they embark on the net zero transition. Until then, organizations are already using the ISO Net Zero Guidelines to support them in developing credible net zero strategies. BSI has been supporting several of these organizations, including the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, General Motors, Climate Action for Associations and Planet Mark in their use of the Guidelines, and published a case study report demonstrating their experience last week. Reaching Net Zero can create a sustainable world and a better society, but how do we get there? Standards can help to enable and mainstream the transition to net zero by providing a common framework of guidance to take action. This week at the Labour Party Conference, BSI Net Zero Policy Manager, Emily Faint, alongside Laura Clarke OBE CEO of ClientEarth, Toby Perkins MP Shadow Minister for Nature & Rural Affairs, and Kerry McCarthy, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, discussed the role of standards in building a net zero future. Frameworks like the ISO Net Zero Guidelines are already demonstrating this impact. Learn more about the Guidelines: Net Zero Guidelines | BSI (bsigroup.com) #NetZero #NetZeroGuidelines

When setting out a net zero strategy, it’s important that all greenhouse gases (GHG), not just carbon dioxide, are accounted for. Carbon Dioxide is the most well-known GHG and has become synonymous with climate change-inducing emissions, but it is not the only one having a negative impact on the planet. Methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, and more are contributing to climate change, many of which have a higher warming potential than carbon dioxide. Measuring all of these GHGs is important in order to create an accurate picture of an organization's net zero efforts. With definitions of different GHG emissions and expert advice on how to reduce them, the ISO Net Zero Guidelines can help organizations take comprehensive and credible action to reduce ALL of their emissions. Friday 21st June 2024. Register now for free to either join the session on the day or receive a recording of the session in you are unable to attend. ISO’s definition of Net Zero is now well established and many companies are now making their net zero claims publicly (either using this methodology or a similar one (such as SBTI’s). Their reasons? Companies are setting these climate change targets to direct their carbon reduction programmes and also to meet supply chain reporting requirements. Many also anticipate regulatory declarations to be on the horizon. In this session we explore why businesses of any size need a net zero target and explore exactly how to go about doing it (yourselves), based on achievable timelines and with interim targets on the way to your goal. Without a commonly accepted framework for net zero action, how can we know that the benefits are being realised? Global comparisons become difficult without a shared system, and how can you be sure you are reporting on actual progress? Having a variety of systems and guidelines leads to disruption, confusion, and inefficiencies, making it challenging to assess efforts globally. That’s why we developed the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, because a common system, language, and metrics are crucial in creating a cohesive approach to tackling climate change. Rather a lovely way to kick off the week, as ITM - Independent Data Consultants have become the first client to earn one of our new 'Aligned to Net Zero' certificates. ITM use advanced technology to help the pensions and insurance industries get full value from their data, which as a result helps their clients to save money, reduce risk and improve customer experience. From straightforward member tracing exercises to complex GMP equalisation calculations, ITM uses bespoke technology and highly skilled consultants to draw real value from clients' data. This certificate means that ITM are committed to calculating and reducing their impact on climate change, by reducing their #greenhousegasemissions year-on-year, in line with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and now with the help of Go Climate Positive have a plan that shows how they will achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions. Our interpretation of Net Zero is that we should eliminate most of our emissions before neutralising what remains by removing an equivalent quantity of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Go Climate Positive includes all relevant categories of emissions in our calculation and reduction plans for clients, including the impacts of their supply-chain and products and services. ITM’s emissions have been calculated, using the GHG Corporate and Value Chain Protocol Standards, and their Net Zero targets have been set, in line with the Science Based Targets guidelines, with the independent guidance of Go Climate Positive. You can view their certificate here: 👇 https://lnkd.in/enhDR73g #certificate #greenhousegas #GHG #carbonfootprint #netzero #sustainable #carbonreductionplan

Chief Carbon Coach, Founder and Managing Director of Go Climate Positive - Show you mean business on the climate emergency
I am delighted to share with my network that ITM - Independent Data Consultants are the first clients to have earned one of our new 'Aligned to Net Zero' certificates. So many businesses are moving towards #NetZero targets rather than carbon neutral ones and so we have evolved our support practices, processes and certification to reflect this change in emphasis. While 2050 remains the target for many of the Government’s Net Zero plans, 2030, remains an important milestone for demonstrating real progress towards these targets. As this date looms large on the horizon and more and more customers choose to deal with more sustainable organisations, the need for businesses to implement a carbon reduction strategy and publish their net zero commitments is becoming ever-more necessary. Well done to ITM for being one of the first!

Climate technology offers innovative solutions when it comes to achieving net zero. This tech increasingly aims to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Understanding the extent to which carbon removals and offsets can be used in credible transition plans is crucial for organizations. All organizations should prioritise emissions reductions over the use of offsets when it comes to achieving net zero. However, offsets are a useful tool when it comes to dealing with residual emissions, those left over after all feasible measures to reduce emissions have been used. When it comes to using offsets, only the removal-based offset removes emissions from the atmosphere and stores it, preventing these greenhouse gases from contributing to increased global warming. 65% of the largest 2,000 publicly traded companies and 63% of Fortune 500 companies have net zero targets. Net zero is increasingly understood as a necessary goal for stakeholders and customers. Organizations need to think not only about their own net zero targets but how they can demonstrate they are taking credible action towards reaching it. The ISO Net Zero Guidelines can help, providing expert guidance on measuring and reducing emissions. Big Net Zero standard news today! ISO finally announced the kick off of its formal net zero standard development process. The new standard will be applicable to organizations at any level seeking to deliver net zero aligned strategies and targets, including companies, cities and even nation states. The draft standard is based on the ISO Net Zero International Workshop Paper that was published at the end of 2022 and will be developed through ISOs formal international negotiation process. There are many science aligned paths to net zero for organizations and ISO is a globally recognized standard setter for companies around the world. Their contribution to this work will be a significant step forward for building a strong set of standards that can help guide companies through the net zero transition. I am delighted to be contributing to this standard as a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group 207 to ISO and look forward to a robust international negotiation process to deliver a high integrity, ambitious standard that works in the real world. https://lnkd.in/gPuAPTPb
