🧡 On this significant day, September 30, we come together to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day of deep significance, dedicated to honoring the children who were taken from their families and never returned home from the painful era of residential schools. Our thoughts are with the survivors, families, and communities whose lives have been profoundly impacted by these historical injustices. Let us remember the immense toll that the residential school system has had on Indigenous individuals and their cultures. By wearing orange, we symbolize our commitment to acknowledging the cultural heritage that was tragically stripped away from Indigenous children. But our actions must extend beyond symbolism. To truly do trauma-informed work, our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation must extend beyond words. It requires a genuine willingness to learn, to listen, and to be agents of change within ourselves and the systems we operate in. We must firmly reject the continuation of paths that perpetuate harm and discrimination. This is a day for education and understanding, to ensure that the painful history and ongoing repercussions of residential schools are never forgotten. In times of need, survivors can find emotional support through the Hope for Wellness Help Line, which offers assistance 24/7 at 1-855-242-3310 or online. Today and every day, let's stand together in compassion, remembrance, and the pursuit of a more just and equitable future. #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #HonoringSurvivors #ResidentialSchools #SupportAndHealing #IndigenousRights

This program is incredibly important for many of our most vulnerable families. It’s time to move past the false rhetoric that this program takes funding away from public schools or their students. The truth is EXACTLY the opposite. Illinois taxpayers pay taxes to support public schools even when they send their children to private schools. When a child goes to a private school, that means the class sizes in the public schools are smaller than they would others be and there are more resources available per student for those who attend public schools. The reality is that private school parent taxpayers have been subsidizing the public school system because they have paid taxes and haven’t burdened the system the entire time. In Illinois, there are about 200K private school students. The average cost of educating a child is about $15K… that’s about $3B a year of avoided cost to taxpayers. The entire Invest in Kids program as it was constructed provides for a maximum of $75MM in tax credits per year, but to date hasn’t hit the cap and has been closer to $50MM. Let that sink in. Private schools are saving taxpayers about $3B a year and costing about $50MM per year. We’d all be far better off growing the program, investing more total funds in educating the next generation. This doesn’t have to be a win/lose (or lose/lose as it will be if the legislature fails to renew the program). It can and should be a win/win. It’s time for public and private schools and our elected representatives to engage in healthy cooperation and competition to better serve our children and citizens.
