Data highlights of this week in animal sheltering. First, Best Friends Animal Society released their 2023 annual report, which contains some really interesting insights. Today is World Spay and Neuter Day. In America, the initiative was encouraged by actress and animal lover Doris Day and her Animal Foundation in 1995. Spaying and neutering your pet prevents an unsustainable influx of baby cats and dogs, many of which will end up on the streets or in shelters. For those without access to adequate resources, a litter can prove economically devastating, forcing them to surrender the newborns. Making sure your pet is spayed or neutered is essential to maintaining a healthy shelter system. In Los Angeles and many other parts of the country, shelters are catastrophically overpopulated. Make sure your animal is spayed or nuetered. Modern iterations of the procedure are safe and designed to minimize animal discomfort. As with any vet procedure, spay and neuter services can be expensive.
