Proud to represent Total Court Services and CourtFact with these 3 individuals during the #CourtFact sponsored event for the 49th American Probation and Parole Association Training Institute in Indianapolis. We met amazing people, sang, danced, and snapped this photo with the CourtFact Indy Car. One might say that is a great way to spend your Sunday evening and I would have to agree. #APPAIndianapolis2024

The legal maxim "justice delayed is justice denied" comes to mind, both for the victim and the person being accused. Unfortunately, like almost every other thing the government is supposed to be accountable for (and the Judicial system is as critical as any other) a systemic failure in properly funding and supporting it has led us to this point in time, unacceptable waits for the actual cases to start, underpaid lawyers and a legal aid system that is not fit for purpose. It is not even about prisons being so over crowded that judges are being told not to issue jail sentences, even when merited, or the early release of prisoners, what this is about is the confidence that the people have in the judicial system and belief that it will serve, protect and provide justice...the list of government failings is embarrassing to say the least and outrageous to be honest but the question is will anything change with Labour, even if we have a KC for Prime Minister. #justice

The purpose of a parole board is to assess someone's likelihood of success, should they be granted discretionary parole. Sentencing authority must remain the job of the courts. This simple change creates a fairer legal system, and better honors the separation of powers. #akleg

💡 Following the Sentencing Council's recent consultation about mitigating factors in sentencing, we've been thinking about whether remorse is really a useful factor to take into consideration. It's a contentious topic and our conversations with members have reflected this, providing valuable insights into what it means to appear remorseful (or not) in Court. Our response will be sent to the Sentencing Council for consideration, but in the meantime Policy Manager and former probation officer Kelly, and Involvement Manager and former magistrate Sean share some of our findings, offering their own thoughts on this complex issue. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eaDbeEE5

CYFA works to change systems. Our Youth Peer Court (YPC) is part of the solution by removing entry points into the juvenile legal system through pre-charge youth diversion based in restorative justice. CYFA's restorative framework allows young people who have engaged in wrongdoing to have community-based opportunities to take actionable accountability for the harm they have caused and avoid system involvement. https://lnkd.in/eQkVQMRm

In recent years, the criminal justice system has increasingly turned to alternative methods of dealing with offenders, particularly those who are non-violent or first-time offenders. Court-ordered diversions are one such method, offering individuals a way to avoid traditional criminal prosecution and instead participate in a program designed to address the underlying issues that led to their involvement in criminal activity. In this guide, we will explore the world of diversions, alternative sentencing, and deferred prosecution, providing you with valuable information on types of programs, eligibility criteria, finding the best program for your agency, how your agency can get started, and more.

When someone is given a life sentence, they will be subject to that sentence for the rest of their life. However, the judge must specify the minimum term in which the offender must spend in prison. In this article, Olliers Solicitor Martha Odysseos considers how time spent on remand is reflected when calculating minimum terms in relation to life sentences.
