Professor Elijah Behr hopes to understand the heart rhythm problems that cause sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS). This. Yup - I am 1 in 26. And right now it sucks. Why? After over 5 years being seizure free, I had a grand mal seizure two weeks ago. As far as seizures go, this one was relatively mild, and thankfully I had no additional injuries (which hasn't always been the case. #TBIs really do stink). Dealing with cognition issues, vocabulary loss and memory loss makes it challenging to be a good employee. While I look fine, and physically feel file, I can't remember some of what happened yesterday, last week, or even earlier in the month of January before my seizure. Sometimes what I'm saying comes out as gobbeldy-gook or incredibly disjointed thoughts/words. Even thinking through ordinary things - like what am I going to pack for lunch - is a bit of a challenge. That kind of thing makes being a productive employee in today's hyper-competitive, must be a 'perfect' performer mentality really, really challenging. So while I have posted positive posts in the past, I also want to raise awarness of the very real challenges that face those of us with #epilepsy. I encourage employers to really examine their culture to see if it is willing to accomodate not just the letter of the #ADA, but to truly support those who need #accomodations - whether long or short term.
