Our Chair, Sarah Howard MBE, was at the first meeting of the UK Year of Service Business Advisory Council, yesterday, to hear Lord Blunkett talk about this great scheme. It offers 9-12 month placements for young people to gain skills and experience while earning the living wage. The programme aims to support thousands of young people to develop skills that the economy needs to support growth and contribute to their local communities. 👏 If you're a business that wants to get involved, then contact milly@ukyear.com

We need your help! Canada's federally-funded WIL delivery partners are asking the Government of Canada to reinvest in work-integrated learning in Budget 2024. Finance Canada has their pre-budget consultation survey live until Feb 9, and the first question asks: “What policy do you think would best create jobs and grow the economy?” One of the answer options includes WIL: “Support the younger generation to find good job opportunities, with affordable education, apprenticeship opportunities, co-op placements, and internships.” We’re calling on you to fill out the survey and encourage everyone in your networks who believes in WIL to do the same. Let’s show the government that investing in work-integrated learning is a top priority! https://lnkd.in/gdZfE-Zx

We need your help! Canada's federally-funded WIL delivery partners are asking the Government of Canada to reinvest in WIL in Budget 2024. Finance Canada launched its pre-budget consultation. It runs until February 9, 2024. Importantly, the survey's first question asks: What policy do you think would best create jobs and grow the economy? And one of the options listed includes WIL: "Support the younger generation to find good job opportunities, with affordable education, apprenticeship opportunities, co-op placements, and internships." We're calling on you to fill out the survey and to encourage everyone in your networks to do the same. This is an incredible opportunity to have your voice heard, to show the government that investing in WIL is one of the best ways to create jobs and grow the economy, and to help ensure that federal funding for WIL remains a top priority of the government. https://ow.ly/FU7z50QxbFp #WIL4Canada #PreBudgetConsultations

The article discusses how some graduates in the UK are landing starting salaries as high as $343,000 at top law and investment banking firms. These high salaries come with significant demands, such as long working hours and intense pressure. The financial rewards are substantial, but they also entail personal sacrifices, including disrupted personal lives and mental strain. For more details, you can read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gwppbX3w

Skills, one of our most persistent policy failures. As well as replacing the broken Apprenticeship Levy, with a new Growth and Skills Levy, the next Labour government will combine and devolve adult education budgets, with our skills effort overseen by a new national institution, Skills England. But today, addressing the skills gap is a necessary, not a sufficient, requirement for economic success. There is now a wealth of evidence that greater in-work security, better pay, and more autonomy in the workplace have substantial economic benefits. IMF research has shown how enabling workers to better combine family life and work can broaden labour market participation. And there are strong statistical relationships between job satisfaction and workplace performance https://lnkd.in/eS6TQMsU

The central challenge for the new Government is getting growth back into the economy and generating wealth in every local community across the UK. Unfortunately, today’s #KingsSpeech announcements fell short of that. While there were ambitious-sounding proposals on planning reform, there wasn’t any sign of the small business plan promised by Labour in opposition being delivered. Poor payment practices by big businesses towards their smaller suppliers and contractors are rife, blighting more than half of small firms in the UK. It’s a drag on growth and investment, and puts some small businesses at risk of going bust. The lack of promised legislation to tackle late payments is the most serious omission for our small business community and will hold back economic growth. These poor payment practices hamper cashflow and investment. I’d like to see the Government to look again at this and deliver on the promise it made. Meanwhile, the move from an Apprenticeship Levy to a Growth and Skills Levy will risk small business apprenticeships unless the Government quickly follows up with its promised unequivocal commitment to protect Government co-investment for apprenticeships at small employers. Similarly, the Industrial Strategy Council commitment doesn’t mention the need for a small business voice, to prevent it being dominated by large corporate incumbent interests. When it comes to the developing employment rights package, there are increasing concerns from small businesses. A snap poll by FSB during the General Election campaign found 92 per cent of small employers have concerns about the prospect of increased costs and risks when they employ people. The King’s Speech contained no commitments within the proposals to look after small employers who will struggle the most. It's worth bearing in mind that small businesses are more likely than bigger firms to take on those furthest from work. Small firms must be given the right platform to recruit those out of work, create new jobs, and expand. There was nothing on this today. The Government has previously pledged to consult widely and openly on measures it has announced, and FSB will be working intensely on this over the coming months, and helping our community to deal with the more difficult challenges. Looking towards the Budget coming in the Autumn, today’s speech piles pressure onto the Chancellor and Business Secretary to make progress in achieving economic recovery and growth. Small businesses and the self-employed can drive this, but only if the right conditions are there.

After Labour's landslide victory at the UK General Election, Insider Media takes a closer look at the Party's plans for #manufacturing and hears opinions from industry experts. "We badly need a #manufacturing strategy to overcome the UK's anaemic economic growth - in fact 99 per cent of #manufacturers believe we need one," said Chris Corkan, the Region Director at the manufacturers lobby group Make UK. "Recruiting and retaining talent is the major issue for us," said Claire Umney, the managing director of Birmingham-based ball unit manufacturer ALWAYSE. "We have to view training, particularly when providing apprenticeships, as more of a gateway to our industry." Will Matthews, head of commercial research at global property consultancy Knight Frank, said: "Much has been said of Labour’s industrial strategy, but unlike the Inflation Reduction Act in the US, this is not one of big spending promises, mainly because the fiscal capacity just isn't there. "Looking at the manifesto, we can expect a relatively small investment into ports, supply chains, and green industries. Financial services is mentioned in a positive light. Labour has also recognised the importance of life sciences to UK growth, while data centres will be reclassified as nationally significant infrastructure projects, allowing planning decisions to be made by ministers rather than local councils. "Critics however, will argue that the plans lack the radical, transformative changes needed to achieve Labour's ambitious target of the highest sustained economic growth among G7 nations. "The underlying assumption is that economic and political stability, combined with targeted government backing in specific areas, will be sufficient to entice investors back to the UK, with knock-on effects for real estate demand." #SupportUKmfg #ShoutAboutUKmfg #UKmanufacturing #UKmfg https://lnkd.in/e5A4BSQv
