Recently, a potential candidate asked, "What's the difference between working for a district public school and a charter public school?" Here's our Executive Director Orin Gutlerner's response: It’s Different Here. (That’s the slogan the Boston Celtics adopted for this season’s playoff run.) The answer probably starts with the fact that charter schools are required to articulate – and live by – a #mission statement. And the more clear a school is about its mission, the more likely it is to attract people who come to work with a common set of #values. In contrast, schools in big districts are not necessarily obligated to have a unique mission or specialization. In many cases, they’re actively discouraged from being different. But as a charter school, we literally can’t remain open if we’re not in some way different, as defined by our mission statement. Here's what the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has to say about our faithfulness to our mission: Board members, school leaders, and teachers described the school’s mission in ways that reflect a common understanding. All stakeholders described how the school aims to nurture a community that is inclusive and joyful through the school’s jaguar values and schoolwide events. Stay different. - Read more about Bridge Boston Charter School's mission on our website: https://lnkd.in/efGDDn87 #LookingforWork? We're still #hiring for the 2024-25 school year! This article is a perfect example of how we might make different decisions on a macro scale if wellbeing tradeoffs were considered as core to cost-benefit analyses, not just financial considerations. There are always tradeoffs, but the unsustainable ones tend to concentrate on communities getting the short end of the stick economically, too. “The campus’s culture reflects that of Staten Island, whose residents often value planting one’s roots in the neighborhood and maintaining proximity to family over making frequent moves in the name of upward mobility. After hearing the news of the campus’s closing, many of my students complained to me about having to commute to or live on the Queens campus, about 27 miles away, which would require them to disrupt their relationships with their family, friends and jobs.” So how many students will drop out of college and be worse off? There’s no control-z when the tradeoffs get too great, but there are individually held burdens that deepen inequities and harms. St. John’s is operating in the same context we all are— I’m not bashing nor endorsing their decision—when “sustainability” and “efficiency” are only counted in dollars, we all lose. #wellbeing

One of the key decision drivers for corporations to expand in or relocate to a city, for executive talent to build a long-term career, and for capital to invest in a particular place, is the quality of schools, especially high schools. We in Chicago are very fortunate in having a wide range of outstanding public schools, great catholic schools, and other private schools that offer strong choices for residents and newcomers alike. But we do have a need to invest more in neighborhood CPS schools across all 77 neighborhoods to ensure that every public school, independent of its location, can offer high quality education. Our strategy to ensure Chicago's position as a great global city for corporations, talent, and capital and residents alike should be more focussed on ensuring great selective enrollment high schools and outstanding neighborhood schools and not a false choice of just pursuing one path between both offerings.
Editorial: Chicago's selective-enrollment schools are a civic asset worth saving

Every education leader has a vision for the future of their campus, but it's hard to know where to start or how to get there. When you create a community where everyone knows what they do best — whether they're students, faculty or staff — you create alignment that drives growth. CliftonStrengths provides the shared language and sense of belonging that points everyone on campus toward a common goal. What does it mean to become a campus that is strengths-based? https://lnkd.in/gnimnb9i

Jamie Bramburger from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology knows that regional college campuses have their challenges. Most are located in smaller or rural communities that are aging, have limited diversity, and are struggling to retain their youth. Some don’t even have public transit or student residences, but despite these obstacles, smaller campuses are also known for their resiliency and creativity. They are masters at creating town-and-gown relationships with their host municipality and are known for their ability to build partnerships that help both the college and the broader community. Strategic enrolment management can also be a strength if there is strong leadership, a data-informed approach, and a campus-wide culture that focuses on student success. While the lessons learned come from a small campus, the session will explore some best practices in enrolment management that can be applied to both small and large campuses. How can we improve the next hiring season for boarding schools?
Hiring in boarding schools is a challenge with the triple threat model. Community, community, community. At Walnut Hill School for the Arts back in the day, we used to tease the head that this was always her message. But she was right! It's the biggest asset. How can we leverage community ethos in reimagining the work load to foster a new generation of boarding school faculty? https://lnkd.in/eVWAcw-H #hiring #community #showchoir #readitandseehowthatrelates
