Every now and then you read a book that you finish and go "Wow". 'Every Deep-Drawn Breath' by Wes Ely, a Vanderbilt University Medical Center physician, was one of those books for me. He gets it. Dr. Ely is a tremendous story teller and he took me on a journey through patient stories, where he taught me about the difficult reality of patients lives post ICU care and what the healthcare profession can do about it. This experience was both educational and impactful all in one. It will make you think. At its core, this book reaffirmed that holistic, humanistic, patient centered care is what works. A mix of technical, emotional, spiritual care. Here is just one of many quotes that I took away: "They were scared and wanted to be held, not physically but in the gaze of the doctor, to be seen and heard and supported. They needed me to know that this hospital stay had barreled into their lives like a tornado...they came to me wanting to be pieced together again body and soul." We are 'humans caring for humans' as Jason A. Wolf, Ph.D., CPXP so eloquently says and this book tells that story. Add this to your reading list. #humanexperience #patientexperience
It’s a fantastic book. I also recommend Dr. Jay Wellons’ book All That Moves Us.
It’s in my cue. Thanks for the recommendation.
I’ve been preaching the same for over 2 years, Brian Carlson. I was moved by his humanity, learned a ton, and have recommended to our sales team and anyone who interacts with ICU physicians, nurses and patients.
Leading with heart!
Wes Ely thank you for being a voice for those unheard!

TY for sharing Brian Carlson and for your kind words. It is a great book!!
Thanks, Brian! I will add this to my list! "Seen, heard, and supported"
