💎 Cruzcampo is now the most expensive beer in UK supermarkets.
🍻 I stopped to pick up some beers ahead of last night’s Euro 2024 matches. There is a lot of beer promo activity at present, and I’m not 100% loyal to any particular brand, so I was on the lookout for a good deal.
🙄 As usual, I had to do a double take at the fixture. According to the volume price on this label, Cruzcampo costs £28.41 per litre. Very bougie indeed.
🙅♂️ Ok, so it’s obviously an error, but this is a prime example of why shoppers en masse can find supermarket shopping so confusing. This fixture had some volume prices per litre and some per 100ml. That there is even an option to input the volume price in more than one format per category will be the root cause of the error.
❌ Why doesn’t the pricing system flag this error and prevent it from updating until it is corrected?
🤖 “Category volume price must be per 100ml. Cannot enter price per 1 litre.”
🏷️ Are digital shelf edge label the solution, or has anyone noticed similar errors on those too? No point rolling out the fancy hardware if the software can’t catch things like this.
🧹 Given that I lose count of the amount of pricing errors I see on any visit to any supermarket, it doesn’t feel unreasonable to suggest that if supermarkets were subject to surprise inspections by the Competition and Markets Authority and fined £1,000 per error, per store, we’d see pricing confusion swept away almost overnight.
