Another post retirement nightmare. I had to cancel Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BC/BS) because their premium was too high. I’m eligible for Tri-Care West so I went with them. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) dropped the ball on processing the cancellation. I submitted the cancelation at the beginning of May, 2023. It took OPM until October to process it. Evidently, there’s a system in place that flags the processing of prescription drugs. Even if you explain to the organization providing the prescription that you have a new insurance, if their is a primary insurance in place, the new insurance is automatically downgraded to a secondary insurance and the primary insurance pays the cost of the prescription. The cancellation finally went through but as you can see BC/BS is charging me, because I’m the sponsor, all the prescription drug charges from June until September, 2023, which totals $11,401.76. I’ve called BC/BS, OPM, and the Pharmaceutical Companies that prescribed the prescriptions. BS/BC told me to bring on a Congretional Investigation or law suit. I was specifically told to “do what I have to do.” The pharmacies all stated they couldn’t even go back a month to change the charge to the correct insurance. I managed to contact OPM at 5:52 am Arizona time yesterday (04/04/2024). Contacting them was a miracle because I’ve tried numerous times and received a message that their call volume was too high and to call back later. I need help. Any suggestions or contacts? Make sure to include this in your retirement brief. This issue was not addressed when I retired.
