Reflections and thoughts on a year bringing a lot of change to my professional life, but most certainly also to personal life. Transitioning from a background in naval architecture to a role within a pharmaceutical engineering company has been an enlightening journey. The initial months were marked by a steep learning curve, as I grappled with unfamiliar concepts, terminology, and processes. Each day presented new challenges, pushing me out of my comfort zone and compelling me to adapt and grow rapidly. However, this learning curve has been incredibly rewarding. I've gained a deeper understanding of the intricate world of pharmaceuticals, appreciating the meticulousness and precision it demands. My skills in problem-solving and attention to detail, honed during my time as a naval architect, have proven invaluable in this new context. It's been gratifying to see how my diverse skill set can be applied in different industries, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge. On a personal level, this transition has been a catalyst for positive development. Embracing change, confronting uncertainties, and pushing boundaries have fostered resilience and adaptability in me. I've also had the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of professionals, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the table. These interactions have enriched my professional network and broadened my horizons, reinforcing the value of continuous learning and collaboration. Amidst the challenges and growth, it's been essential to find moments of joy and fulfillment. The camaraderie among colleagues, the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles, and the thrill of contributing to projects with real-world impact have made this journey immensely enjoyable. While the transition was daunting initially, the past year has been a testament to the rewards of embracing change, seizing opportunities, and finding joy in the process. It would be an understatement to say that the descision to join NNE in a for me completely new role has proven to bring so much more than I expected. Last year, at this day (April 13, 2023), I arrived at Boston Airport in the United States, ready to tackle new challenges after completing my undergraduate studies. Despite the exhaustion and uncertainties, I made a promise to myself: to face every obstacle with determination and pride in my ability to overcome. Today, I'm proud to say that I've not only conquered challenges but also experienced growth in all aspects of my life. Personally, socially, academically, and professionally, I've pushed myself beyond limits and seized opportunities for advancement. The main reason I am sharing my experiences is to convey the message that nothing is impossible in this world if you have the courage to persevere and the resilience to overcome obstacles. Each challenge I faced served as a reminder that with determination and a positive mindset, we can navigate even the most daunting of circumstances. If you have a goal, seize the moment and take action don't wait for the future, as opportunities await when you have the motivation to pursue them. Additionally, remember to prioritize self-love and understanding, as no one can comprehend your needs and aspirations better than yourself. By fostering connections with people from all walks of life, you create a diverse family that enriches your perspective and experiences the world's knowledge through shared connections. Furthermore, remember that supporting others not only strengthens your bonds but also creates a ripple effect of kindness and support in the world. “Some journeys take us far from home. Some adventures lead us to our destiny.” ~ C. S. Lewis Historically, a career has been most commonly compared to climbing a ladder: structured progression within a profession or industry symbolising the various stages of advancement and achievement that individuals strive to climb throughout their professional journey. How does this compare with reality? When I was 8 years old, I gazed up at the night sky with wonder and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. The idea of exploring the vastness of space, floating weightlessly among the stars, fuelled my imagination like nothing else. In reality, my first job tuned out to be more grounded. Having applied to be a greenkeeper, I ended up as an office admin assistant given responsibility to digitise 300 manual files. It was a stark contrast to the boundless expanse of space I had once yearned to explore. By my thirties that office job lead me to becoming a Finance professional. Although, I believed my life's trajectory was ultimately leading me towards becoming a full-time pastor. After many fruitless years I found myself questioning whether that was truly my calling. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to let go of my aspirations and discard the notes from Bible college that once represented my dreams. Within a matter of months, I found myself seconded to a nine-month 'culture' role that has since blossomed into a fulfilling career spanning five years. Some would say I have finally found my true calling, despite its divergence from my initial plans and aspirations. The reality is, a career shares more similarities with tackling a climbing wall than a ladder. Looking up from the ground, the path is uncertain and it is only through trial and error we find our optimal route based on skills, knowledge and opportunities that we gain along the way. So, how should I feel about the aspirations of my younger self? Sometimes we need to forgive our past selves, let go of the unrealistic dreams that once defined us and embrace the journey towards becoming our best selves. On reflection, each detour has shaped me in ways I could never have anticipated, and for that, I am grateful. As I continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of life, I hold onto the hope that one day, perhaps, my childhood dream of reaching for the stars will become a reality. Until then, I embrace the journey, wherever it may lead.

Lessons from managing part-time interns: 1. Overtly communicate *and* document: Instructions, examples, and purpose help you receive what you *actually* want. Proper documentation enables you to scale. 2. *Give* and take: Enrichment sessions for their benefit and connections to help them on their career journeys help build relationships. 3. Seek feedback: Continuous feedback (shout out to Kaizen and the andon cord) on what can improve *and* what's working yields better outcomes. Don't forget to also offboard intentionally!

Last night at my son's state fair, I saw the magic of teamwork in action! 🌟 The kids absolutely rocked it, showing up as a united team. They spoke confidently in front of a whole gym of people (!!), cheered each other on, and nailed their presentations. It reminded me of 3 key areas for building a high-performing team: 1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: When we work together and support one another, we can achieve incredible things. 2. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰: Believing in yourself and each other makes tackling new challenges exciting and rewarding. 3. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: Having a leader who guides, believes in, and pushes you is essential.
