In the journey of life, hardship isn't defined by the obstacles we encounter but by the unwavering courage that propels us forward. Throughout my successful Para Cycling career, I have come to understand that the true essence of overcoming challenges lies in our ability to face them head-on. Obstacles are an inevitable part of our path, whether it's navigating a tough terrain on a bike or tackling the twists and turns of everyday life. It's not the hurdles themselves that define us, but the resilience and bravery we summon to conquer them. My journey in life has been a testament to this philosophy. Hardship, in its essence, becomes a canvas for the strokes of courage. It's about finding that inner strength to pedal through the storm, to take chances even when the road ahead seems uncertain. The pages of my books, "Finding Your Inner Gold" and "The Force Within," echo this sentiment — that our struggles are the raw material from which we sculpt our victories. Overcoming fears, building resistance, and embracing positivity are the cornerstones of navigating through life's challenges. Each setback is an opportunity to showcase the force within, to redefine what's possible. It's not the absence of adversity that defines a journey but the attitude we adopt in the face of it. As I continue to train and work towards world cups and the possibility of my 4th Paralympic Games in Paris this year, I am reminded that the pursuit of goals isn't a smooth ride. It's a journey filled with inclines and declines, yet each pedal turn symbolises the courage to persevere. My aspirations this year and onwards stem from the belief that sharing these experiences can inspire others to conquer their own mountains. Dream or goal? What truly sets them apart? I found the answer through a runner friend, Mr. Li. At 45, Mr. Li moved to the US from China. For over a decade, he found comfort in the familiar - mostly Chinese friends, Chinese food, Chinese church. But he dreamed of breaking down the cultural barriers, connecting more broadly. After he retired, he discovered the marathon world, a true melting pot, where everyone, champions and hobbyists, start at the same time, at the same starting line. The shared struggle of the 26.2-mile journey creates bonds like no other. Inspired, Mr. Li decided to run a marathon. At 62, he ran his first. Next, he aimed for the Boston Marathon. 69 years old, and 38 marathons later, he qualified. His goal now? Complete 100 marathons. During the 2020 Covid lockdown, the world shut down but he ran 8 virtual marathons, his highest yearly count, simply because his goal was so clear. Now at 74, and with almost 60 marathons behind him, he has no plan stopping till he hits 100. Mr. Li showed me that dreams are just thoughts until we give them form as goals. Without a clear goal, a dream remains just that - a dream. But with a goal, a plan, and determination, we can endure, push through and make them reality. So I post this challenge to myself and you: Have we breathed life into our dreams by shaping them into goals, and carving out a path to achieve them? 

Movement. My Word of the Year is movement. 🚀 Movement forward everyday toward my goals. Some days we are able to make big leaps; other days tiny steps. The key is to keep going, even when it is hard. 😬 Movement out of my comfort zone. That is where the true growth happens. 🏃♀️ Movement physically. Walking, jogging, swimming, biking, stretching- something everyday. 🛩 Movement around the globe. Travel has always been a passion of mine. 2024 will continue to nurture this desire. 🏥 Movement away from the confines of corporate healthcare and toward a career that I love again. I proudly completed my first marathon in the Sydney Marathon, conquering the challenging 42.195 km route in 3 hours, 30 minutes, and 33 seconds, averaging a pace of 5 minutes per kilometer. 😤🥵👣 Although during this monumental achievement, I encountered excruciating pain around the 30 km mark. Nonetheless, are the invaluable lessons I learnt: 1. Proper Training: Marathon preparation exceeds initial limits of 15km. 2. Embrace the Experience: Enjoy each moment, from iconic views to favorite music. 3. Encourage Others: Motivating fellow runners fuels joy and energy and running hi-5s. 4. Stick to Your Pace: Maintain rhythm for a smooth run (stick with the time pacers) 5. Stay Energised: Consistent refueling sustains energy levels. 6. Remembering my people: Aboriginal flags in the crowd on houses reconnected me to my people and ancestors strength to know it’s what we have done for thousands of years when travelling. 7. Connect with the Crowd: Interacting with the cheering crowd was an unexpected source of energy. High-fiving enthusiastic kids along the route was a heartwarming boost. 8. Self-Motivation: Positive affirmations conditioned a resilient mindset. Saying things like “this is easy”, “you’re stronger than you think”, “pain is temporary” made it more manageable than it felt. 9. Know Your "Why: having a deeper purpose for the run, supporting cystic fibrosis, kept me going. 10. Gratitude and Celebration: Crossing the finish line showed me what the human mind, body and spirit is capable of. 11. Recovery: To incorporate stretching, walking, and recovery methods like massage, ice baths, and salt baths to reduce muscle soreness and aid in post-race recovery. And drink heaps of water and electrolytes! This marathon was a profound experience that showcased the strength of the human spirit. It's a testament to what anyone can achieve with dedication, preparation, and a resilient mindset. This was my first, but won’t be my last. Keep going strong my friends! 🏅👣🥵😤💪🏽

Friday marked a significant milestone for me as I completed my first-ever marathon in Jerusalem. Crossing that finish line wasn't just a personal achievement; it was the result of months of dedicated training. Reflecting on this journey, I'm compelled to share a few takeaways that resonate both personally and professionally: 1. Commitment Fuels Success: Training for a marathon demands more than physical endurance; it's a mental battle as well. This weekend, my friends and I embarked on an unforgettable adventure with our mountain bikes. We set out to conquer the rugged terrain and push ourselves to new limits. 😎💪 Along the way, we encountered numerous challenges that tested our skills and determination. Steep inclines, rocky paths, and unpredictable weather conditions tried to deter us, but remained undeterred. 😤🚵♂️ With each obstacle we faced, we rallied together as a team, supporting and encouraging one another. We learned the importance of perseverance and resilience, pushing through fatigue and doubt. 💪🤝 Despite the physical and mental strain, we never lost sight of our goal: reaching the summit. Finally, after hours of relentless effort, we stood atop the mountain, victorious. 🏔️🥳 The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming as we took in the breathtaking panoramic views and breathed in the crisp mountain air. It was a reminder that life's greatest rewards often come after overcoming the toughest challenges. 🌄😍 This experience taught us valuable lessons about ourselves and the power of determination. It reminded us that we are capable of more than we realize when we face adversity head-on. ✨ Today we witnessed the conclusion of arguably the greatest feat of human endurance, ever ✨ Russ Cook (aka Hardest Geezer) completed the 385th marathon of his year long run across Africa, notching up over 10,000 miles across the course of 352 days. In the end it worked out that he’d ran the equivalent of MORE than a marathon every day for a year. What? 🤯 And even putting the insane ultramarathon achievement aside for a second, over the course of the year, Russ ran marathons through food poisoning, serious back injury, sandstorms AND snowstorms, multiple unanticipated hold-ups at borders that threatened to end the mission completely, and didn’t even let it derail his end goal when he and his crew were ambushed and robbed at gun point only 2 months in. I’ve followed Russ’ journey pretty closely over the last year, and have had many times where I’ve read his latest update on Instagram about the newest bump (more like mountain🗻) in the road, and thought ‘surely, this must be it’. I’m pleased to say, I’ve been wrong every time. On the surface, this may initially seem a bit irrelevant from a career perspective, but look a bit closer and I think there’s so much we can take from this. I legit believe this is the best example in our lifetime of how mindset is EVERYTHING. Russ has talked openly about how it was only after having struggled significantly with his mental health, as well as gambling and drinking, that he decided to have a crack at running his first half marathon at the age of 21, and how running quickly became his way of taking control and proving to himself and the world that he could overcome anything. But he’s also talked a lot in the last year about how every single day was a choice. And often one he didn’t want to make. But he did it anyway. Primarily driven by how much he knew it would mean to so many to see someone - a “normal bloke” as he puts it - doing the seemingly impossible. At every increasingly disastrous turn, he made the active choice to use fear as a throttle not a brake. And I for one think that’s inspirational as hell. “I’m a totally normal bloke, so if I can do this, hopefully people can apply this to their own lives in whatever way they choose. For 99% of people, that’s not going to be running across Africa, but it might look like chasing their dreams a little bit more.” - go on Russ, you absolute legend 👊🏻
