#Ecobank #Group, a leading pan-African financial services provider, has partnered with American Express to broaden American Express Card acceptance across 21 African nations. This initiative will notably extend American Express's reach to twelve additional countries, namely #Burundi, #Central #African #Republic, #Gabon, #Guinea-Bissau, #Liberia, #Malawi, #Mali, #Niger, #São #Tomé and #Príncipe, #Sierra #Leone, The #Gambia, and #Togo, over the next year. This expansion effort will enable cardholders to leverage their American Express cards more extensively across the continent, significantly enhancing the accessibility and convenience of financial transactions. In addition to the wider acceptance at various merchants, the agreement stipulates that Ecobank will facilitate @ATM access for American Express cardholders in all #African #countries except #Cape #Verde. This means that American Express card members will be able to withdraw local currency from Ecobank ATMs, thereby simplifying their financial management while traveling or conducting business within these regions.

Did you know when was the first Universal Credit Card introduced? ➡️ The first Universal Credit Card was introduced in 1950. ➡️ Credit cards originated in the U.S. back in the 1920s, but were issued by individual firms, such as oil companies and hotel chains, to their customers, specifically for purchases made at company outlets. ➡️ It wasn’t until 1950 when Diners Club founders Ralph Schneider and Frank McNamara issued a card that could be used at a variety of establishments. The Diners Club card sparked the modern credit card era. ➡️ Others soon followed, such as American Express, which debuted their card of this type in 1958. ➡️ This also led to the emergence of other Card Schemes like Visa, Mastercard, JCB and China UnionPay etc which we are all familiar today. Tried to get some food at Asda this morning and was told Visa and Mastercard were down worldwide, so cash only. In a rapidly ‘cashless’ society, hundreds of people were told to get cash out at the machine, which obviously then ran out. This made me think about multiple things: 💳 Heavy reliance on two major card providers (Thankfully my American Express saved the day🙌) is far from ideal. 💵 The need for cash to be still relevant - Cash is King is the old adage and it still holds true particularly in emergencies. 💻The need to embrace open banking in a retail environment - enabling people to transfer funds directly for goods, skipping the necessity for cards or cash if desired. Multiple payment avenues are needed so economies can keep running when IT services fail. No system is perfect, but having the variance available mitigates the risk. #payments #fintech #retail #technology #risk #openbanking
