I’m always amazed at how good pharma is at understanding the connections among the 4Ps in hiring senior marketers. Look at the job description of a brand head for most businesses and it is about visual and verbal ID (if you’re lucky) and demand generation/performance marketing (if you’re not). Pharma? They’d eat those jokers alive. This is what a real brand director does. Is there identity, campaign here? Of course. Not a peep about CPM. That’s junior level stuff. And yet I see ads for so-called “CMOs” that are 90% managing adtech/martech and MQL generation.

If you're hiring a C-level marketer, make sure they can actually execute the work themselves. Throw them into the weeds the first 2-3 months before giving them a team. It will reveal their technical abilities and how resourceful they are.
