Headless is dead ☠️ At least for 99.9999% of merchants. I know this topic has been beat to death, but it’s still relevant. Especially now since we’re seeing the byproduct of many brands adopting a headless architecture over the past few years. - 60% of our pipeline are large/enterprise brands who are moving from a custom headless environment to Shopify native. - 80%+ of recent launches and current projects are large merchants who are coming from a headless custom stack. We used to put a GMV indicator to judge if headless was the right approach. But the large merchants are the ones moving towards Shopify native…. Why? - TCO and tech stack costs are dramatically lower on Shopify. - Easier content updates without needing a dev or waiting 2 hours for build time to preview. - Faster feature deployment - Leverge the app ecosystem without the need for custom integrations. - System integrations operate the same way. - Take advantage of Shopify’s product enhancements. Headless doesn’t solve complex back office needs. Yet many merchants still seem to think they do. It’s a Frontend solution for very complex content needs. Unless you’re Nike, you probably don’t need to push content to 50 different places. #ecommerce #headless #shopify

#Shopify is trying to make everyone happy with their new product strategy: by offering Standard to SMBs, Plus to scale-ups, and Hydrogen and Commerce Components to the enterprise segment, it's clear that they want to do it all. From a purely strategic standpoint, being everything for everyone is always a dangerous move—but if anyone has the resources and the credibility to pull it off, it’s Shopify. From a technical standpoint, I feel like there are still many unknowns. Right now, there are at least three different flavors of Shopify architecture: monolithic store with Liquid, headless store with Hydrogen, composable store with Commerce Components. Shopify’s continuing to invest in all three as if they were distinct products, and it’s such a missed opportunity. A couple of examples: - What if the Theme Editor, or some variation of it, became available to headless/composable stores as a headless CMS and could work independently of the underlying technology? - Even crazier: What if, rather than using Liquid for monolithic and React for headless, Shopify went all-in on React across all architectures? Shopify could offer a product that truly grows with merchants rather than requiring a complete tech stack overhaul when the merchant outgrows their current architecture. As your brand scales, you would progressively pick the bits and pieces you’re interested in and leave the rest. The opportunity is there. Is Shopify going to take it?

Need to improve your Shopify store's performance? Go headless! 📣 That's been the party line from tech enthusiasts over the last few years (myself included). But as we've learnt, you should never "go headless" for performance alone. You can, most likely, achieve similar performance benefits with your existing theme. Shopify has broken down the stats for the top headless frameworks vs a Liquid storefront, and you might be surprised by the results. On average, Liquid comes out on top across the board. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, headless has historically been implemented poorly resulting in little to no (or negative) performance gains. Frameworks like Hydrogen and Next.js are making this easier. Secondly, Liquid is (actually) quite good. Since 2020, the average TTFB for Liquid storefronts has increased by 60%. The release of Dawn sparked a wave of themes using web components, responsive images and fewer dependencies. Liquid also has useful features for better performance. The "image_tag" filter now enables lazy loading by default, and new Liquid section properties allow us to preload above-the-fold content. So, the next time you're assessing your store's performance consider how you can renovate your theme before throwing money into a hefty headless project. #shopify #performance #headless

Sunday (St. Patrick’s Day) marked one year since the first Shopify store sent an email with a Grid & Pixel graphic in it. We were running an invite-only beta, we didn’t have a public app yet, and we had to hand-deliver graphics to each customer. We made custom St. Patrick’s Day designs because we didn’t have a library of graphics for every holiday (yet!). We were definitely building the plane while trying to fly it. But, the St. Patrick’s Day promo sent successfully and then the following days were dominoes of other stores sending emails with our graphics, too. After weeks and weeks of planning and building and testing, our idea wasn’t just an idea anymore. It was a real thing that people were actually using. That’s equal parts exciting and terrifying. Now, one year later, our co-founders are at Shoptalk with a much different story to tell — about the hundreds of stores using our Shopify app, our 70+ five-star reviews, and our integrations with partners like Klaviyo. We have many more milestones to reach, but that first one will always stand out to me. It all starts with that first leap, of not just *talking* about what you want to do, but actually *doing it* and sharing it with the world.
