Today, Portugal celebrates Freedom Day, commemorating the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, a pivotal moment that not only changed the course of Portuguese history but also stands out globally for its almost entirely nonviolent nature. This peaceful coup ended decades of authoritarian rule under the Estado Novo regime and sparked the decolonization of Portuguese colonies in Africa. What makes the 25th of April so remarkable is the way it unfolded—without bloodshed, contrasting sharply with many other revolutions that led to extensive conflict. It was a military-led movement, supported by widespread civil resistance, that quickly turned into a festive celebration as people filled the streets, placing carnations in the muzzles of rifles and on soldiers' uniforms. On a personal note, this day holds a deep resonance due to my grandfather's experiences. He fought in the Portuguese Colonial War, also known as the War of the Overseas. While serving, he was torn away from his young family—his son, his wife—to fight in a conflict that was dictated by the motives of others, not by the soldiers' own choices. Despite the hardships, he sought to find moments of joy and connection amid the adversity. Reflecting on his stories is crucial, especially today, as Europe sees a resurgence of right-wing movements. It's important to remember not only the official narratives found in history books but also the personal histories carried in the hearts of our elders. These stories of individual sacrifice, often reluctant and forced, highlight the complexities of freedom and the heavy costs of political and ideological battles. As we observe this day, let's honor those like my grandfather, who despite personal misgivings, fulfilled their duties under challenging circumstances. Let’s listen to and learn from the past, ensuring that the values of democracy, freedom, and peace are never taken for granted. #FreedomDayPortugal #CarnationRevolution #HistoryMatters

Costa Rica Independence Day is celebrated on September 15th to commemorate its declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1821. Here's a brief history: 1. Spanish Colonization: Costa Rica, like many other regions in Central and South America, was originally colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century. It was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, a Spanish administrative region. 2. The Declaration of Independence: On September 15, 1821, Costa Rican leaders, including Juan Mora Fernández and José Manuel de Cañas, received news of the Mexican War of Independence and the signing of the Act of Independence of Central America. Inspired by these events, they decided to declare their own independence from Spanish rule. 3. Peaceful Independence: Unlike many other Latin American countries that achieved independence through armed conflict, Costa Rica's path to independence was relatively peaceful. The declaration was made without significant bloodshed. 4. Joining the Mexican Empire: After gaining independence, Costa Rica briefly joined the Mexican Empire under Emperor Agustín de Iturbide. However, this union was short-lived as Costa Rica soon became dissatisfied with Mexican rule. 5. Part of the Federal Republic of Central America: In 1823, Costa Rica joined the Federal Republic of Central America, which was a federation of several Central American states. This federation faced internal conflicts and eventually dissolved in the 1830s, leading to the emergence of independent Central American nations, including Costa Rica. Costa Rica's Independence Day is celebrated with parades, music, dancing, and various cultural events throughout the country. It's a time for Costa Ricans to reflect on their history and their identity as an independent nation. Makes my heart is now full fill seen my nephew playing the drums and the school kids were I grew up as child having such a great day with this celebration 🥰🎊🇨🇷. Pura Vida Costa Rica. #independenceday #CostaRica #drakebaygreenleaf #vivacostarica

“Vexillolinguistics” is a term I have developed to encapsulate the descriptive language and terminology used in flag design. In short, Vexillolinguistics is the language used to describe flags. Following is the official vexillolinguistic representation of the Flag of Sweden: "A field of blue (#006AA7) with a yellow (#FFCD00) Nordic cross extending to the edges, the vertical bar closer to the hoist. Dimensions: 5:2:9 horizontally, 4:2:4 vertically, overall aspect ratio 5:8." https://lnkd.in/dfB--dAp

🌍✨ Celebrating Independence: Embracing Our Diverse Roots! ✨🏳️ This Independence Day, let's reflect on the freedoms that define our nation. On June 21st, I celebrated Swedish Midsummer by flying the Swedish flag, a tradition that connects me to my heritage and family in Sweden. 🎉 I shared this moment with loved ones far away, capturing our celebration in a photo. Unfortunately, my HOA cited me with a violation of their flag rules, citing Florida Statute 720.304—a misunderstanding, as the statute merely protects the display of certain flags but doesn't prohibit others. 🎇 🇺🇸 Independence Day Reminder - As we celebrate our nation’s independence, let’s remember the freedoms the Bill of Rights guarantees us, including the right to express our cultural identities. 🚩 Flying Flags from Our Origins - Displaying the Swedish flag on Midsummer is a celebration of freedom, just as we display the American flag on the Fourth of July. Both are powerful expressions of our identity and rights. 👥 Uniting Our Community - Flags are symbols that tell stories and connect people. This Independence Day, let’s celebrate the diverse cultures that enrich our nation and reaffirm our commitment to freedom and inclusion. This July, let’s stand for the freedoms that unite us and the heritage that makes each of us unique. Celebrate safely and proudly, and let’s educate others about the importance of both individual and collective freedom. #IndependenceDay #FreedomOfExpression #BillOfRights #CulturalHeritage #UnitedWeStand

Addressing Portugal's Colonial Past The Call for Acceptance and Reconciliation The President's recent comments on Freedom Day have sparked an important discussion about Portugal's colonial history. While some, particularly television commentators and politicians like far-right leader Andre Ventura, may see these debates as divisive or unpatriotic, it is essential to remember that confronting our history is a step towards restoration and reconciliation, not treason. Denial or silence exacerbates historical wounds, whereas acceptance promotes education and progress. It's our collective responsibility as citizens, educators, and professionals to engage in meaningful discussions and actions. Meaningful reparative steps are needed to address the enduring impact of exploitation and oppression towards Africans. Mere acknowledgment isn't enough, concrete measures are vital. In the words of Nelson Mandela, "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." Confronting our past with courage and compassion upholds values of freedom, justice, and equality. Let's embrace this moment to learn from history, work towards a just future, and look beyond current debates.
