It's a startling truth: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of domestic violence, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. These statistics underline the harsh reality that domestic violence affects individuals from all walks of life. This issue is not a private matter; it's a pervasive problem with far-reaching consequences for survivors, their families, and communities. We are working to raise awareness and support survivors in our community – but we can’t do it alone. Collectively, we can work towards breaking the cycle of silence and stigma surrounding this issue. 2023 was a catastrophic year for children. From Ukraine to Gaza, Sudan to Myanmar, children are bearing the brunt of wars waged by adults. Thousands of children continue to be recruited and used by armed forces and armed groups but children around the world are also being killed and maimed at alarming rates, attacks on schools and hospitals have increased exponentially, and children continue to be denied access to humanitarian assistance. This is creating a deeply troubling world; a world where many children will know no other reality than a violent one. Violence begets violence. The International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers - Red Hand Day - was created in 2002 to bring attention to the importance of preventing the recruitment and use of child soldiers. It is arguably more important today than ever before. Peace is possible, violence is preventable and children must be at the heart of the solutions.
The International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers – otherwise known as Red Hand Day – is our annual reminder that children are being recruited and used in armed violence. Every day, the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security is mobilizing innovative research, high-level and grassroots advocacy, as well as hands-on training to end and prevent this grave violation of children's rights. Watch our video to find out why. Because we know peace is possible, violence is preventable, and children must be at the heart of the solutions.
