🌍 Progress in #plastics circularity in Europe is promising, but challenges remain. Poland, with its new bail system, has a chance to catch up. 📈 Circular plastics already account for 13.5% of the market, with targets for 25% by 2030. In Poland, 10.2% of raw materials come from circular sources, with a growing trend towards #recycling. ♻️ Investment in chemical recycling is key to material #quality and achieving targets. Urgent action is needed for the availability of #circular raw materials. 🇪🇺 Europe's share of global plastics production has fallen from 22% (2006) to 14% (2022). Europe is becoming increasingly dependent on imports and its ability to invest in the #circularity of the plastics system and support the transformation of sectors relying on these materials is weakening. Europe needs to increase its investment in circularity in order not to fall behind global trends. Dialogue and cooperation are essential for a #sustainable future. 💡 📌 More information about the report on the circularity of the plastics industry in Europe can be found below 👇 https://lnkd.in/dkBpRPYV #circularity #plastics #sustainablility #recycling

The disparity between what the plastics industry tells the public about recycling and what it knows internally - check out this article based on a Center for Climate Integrity report exposing a troubling pattern in the plastics industry. How do we address these issues sustainably? What can be done to make the plastics industry more transparent and accountable? Innovation in sustainable materials is an option, as are waste management technologies and changes in practices. At Pollen, we work hard towards a zero-waste world by helping companies liquidate sustainably. 👉 Find out more at https://www.pollen.tech/ https://lnkd.in/g3yQEm6G

📣Our ‘Plastics Transition’ roadmap went live two weeks ago. It sets out a pathway to circularity and net zero for the European plastics system and is a crucial milestone for our industry. It should be viewed as an invitation to our value chain and policymakers to challenge our thinking and identify areas where we can progress faster. We have had many questions, feedback and suggestions so far, which is exactly what we are looking for. 📰My article in yesterday’s Politico explains its highlights. Tomorrow is about working towards our progress as plastics manufacturers, as a value chain of the plastics system, accelerated by an enabling policy framework and powered by political will. 👇 https://lnkd.in/e7hpsKuG

"I have never said this before, but Shell has made a wise decision here. Chemical recycling is a polluting and unreliable way to address the growing problem of plastics." — Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics The energy giant Shell has quietly backed away from a pledge to rapidly increase its use of “advanced recycling”, a practice oil and petrochemical producers have promoted as a solution to the plastics pollution crisis. “Advanced” or “chemical” recycling involves breaking down plastic polymers into tiny molecules that can be made into synthetic fuels or new plastics. The most common form, pyrolysis, does so using heat. Shell has invested in pyrolysis since 2019, touting it as a way to slash waste. That year, the company used oil made via pyrolysis in one of its Louisiana chemical plants for the first time. And it began publicizing a new goal for the technology: “Our ambition is to use 1m tonnes of plastic waste a year in our global chemicals plants by 2025.” But recently, the company rolled back that promise with little fanfare: “[I]n 2023 we concluded that the scale of our ambition to turn 1m tonnes of plastic waste a year into pyrolysis oil by 2025 is unfeasible,” it said in its 2023 sustainability report, published in March. https://lnkd.in/gSEPbBJ8

Unlocking the Future of Plastic Recycling: The Power of Combined Approaches In Europe, the quest for higher plastic recycling rates faces significant challenges. A recent study, highlighted by Sustainable Plastics, offers a beacon of hope, revealing that a combination of chemical and mechanical recycling can drastically improve these rates. This groundbreaking research suggests that by 2030, we could achieve an 80% recycling rate, with chemical recycling contributing up to 34% to this goal. This is not just a step forward; it's a leap towards a more sustainable future. At Enval Limited, we resonate with this vision. Our cutting-edge technologies in chemical recycling, along with our verification platform, are designed to complement each other, maximizing the circularity potential of plastics and ensuring transparency in the end-to-end supply chain. We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to reach these ambitious goals. Together, we can rewrite the narrative of plastic recycling, turning today's challenges into tomorrow's achievements. Discover more about this study here. https://buff.ly/40KjaxX

Shell has quietly backed away from a pledge to rapidly increase its use of “advanced recycling”, a practice oil and petrochemical producers have promoted as a solution to the plastics pollution crisis. But recently, the company rolled back that promise with little fanfare: “[I]n 2023 we concluded that the scale of our ambition to turn 1m tonnes of plastic waste a year into pyrolysis oil by 2025 is unfeasible,” it said in its 2023 sustainability report, published in March. Those in the plastics industry knew from one day that these wild and exaggerated "chemical or advanced recycling" claims being made by these chemical/plastic companies were false. The best way to improve the plastic pollution problem is to use less plastic and recycle more, and the chemical industry is only interested in making more virgin plastic. Current virgin prices. due to weak demand and overproduction, are killing the the plastics recycling industry. #recycling #plasticsrecycling #plasticrecycling #sustainability #plasticpollution https://lnkd.in/gMnA7G5k
