Glad to be attending the Colorado Community College System Chancellor's Summit on Adult Education. Joseph Garcia framed the day about the importance of adults for making a difference in higher education. Props to Dr. Ayelet Zur-Nayberg for her work organizing this event and all that she does in this space!

A trauma-informed community focused leader dedicated to uplifting marginalized people through education, advovacy, and legislation.
During a recent WhyTry webinar, I had the honor of engaging in a discussion about common misconceptions regarding alternative education. During the session, I emphasized the close relationship between K12 and K12 adult education and the need to develop a continuum of care for youth transitioning from comprehensive high school to adult education. Education in America is going to look very different 10 years from now. Today your neighborhood school is the de facto custodian of your child for 8hrs/day. In the future, just like in all aspects of free citizens, your child's education will largely be driven by family observation, review & thoughtful unrestricted selection.

‘Let us learn: Systemic inquiry into the educational experiences of children and young people in out-of-home care’, examined the educational experiences of children and young people in out-of-home care, including the factors that affect their educational outcomes and ability to stay engaged in education. Here at The MacKillop Institute, we’re proud of our contributions to this important inquiry led by the Commission for Children and Young People Victoria. The report makes 47 recommendations to the Victorian Government to reform these systems to improve educational outcomes. Recommendation #13 advocates for trauma-informed teaching practices to be incorporated into teacher training. Read the full report here https://zurl.co/b1Kb

"The Take Over of Testing" was produced more than ten years ago,. It is still relevant today. Looking back we see how testing policies have failed our students. Critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and empathy were removed with standardized tests. As our founder predicted, the closing of public schools, took monies out of Black and Brown communities struggling for quality and equity in education. The Take Over of Testing focuses on the history of standardized testing as well as documenting the use of these tests to close public schools in Chicago. This documentary also focuses on how children are affected by these tests and closings. Public education reform is the issue of our time. How we fairly educate all of our children has yet to be addressed. https://conta.cc/43Sad73 https://wailofatale.org

Helping people influence the complex places that shape their lives. Education, entrepreneurship, & diversity, technology.
Thanks for this Emily Freitag. Tapping into the important lever of principals, school administrators and schools as a lever and unit of change is so important and often overlooked. Principals enable the environment for any effort - whether teaching children to read, creating a great environment for social and emotional growth, making school a place students and staff want to be, or accelerating and deepening Math learning. Sure, unicorn teachers, students and families make amazing things happen without a supporting system. But most of us are humans and need layers of strong leadership, support and learning every step of the way…at the district level, school level, and classroom level.
In a series of recent stories, Education Week spoke to principals about their role in changing the way that schools teach children to read. https://hubs.ly/Q02C68Jg0
