Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be complex, especially when our identity feels so attached to our veteran status. Although some may seamlessly adopt new identities post-service, others struggle to assume what feels like a new identity. This can be especially true for service members of an older generation, especially if they have spent a significant portion of their life and career in the military. It's natural to question who we are beyond our veteran title, but it's also an opportunity for self-discovery and growth beyond our service. Let's navigate this journey with compassion and openness, embracing the multifaceted identities that make us who we are. Share this with a transitioning veteran! Good news for veterans: new major study examines impact of equitable access to services on health outcomes of 4K+ veterans. Study compares vets who used only traditional VA healthcare w/ those who engaged both VA & PAServes, & includes elements that identify/offer solutions to race & gender-based disparities in how services are accessed/provided. As we pause on Veterans Day to celebrate & honor those who have served our country as part of the Armed Forces, the Endowments & partners PAServes, Veterans Health Foundation, Veterans Affairs Pgh Healthcare System, University of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University & Stanford University are working together to provide data that will be used to ensure all veterans are receiving the services they need to successfully transition from the military to civilian life. “Our aim is to help ensure that veterans from all walks of life & backgrounds have the best possible chance for a prosperous & successful post-military future.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQA7XCyU

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all who have served❤️ For the last 3 years of my life I’ve been surrounded by veterans while working in the psychiatry department. Whether they are colleagues or patients, here is what I’ve learned from them ⭐️You cannot do things alone✨ Whether you lean into a higher power, friends, family, or nature- we don’t want to be alone. The community veterans have built and share with each other is a bond like no other and being in that environment makes me appreciate what they represent and how special the community truly is. ⭐️ Feelings are magic ✨ While working with veterans who have a wide range of psychiatric and/or medical illness, in the most severe cases where someone has an altered state of mind- a person still knows who cares for them. I’ve seen someone struggle from a Traumatic brain injury, dementia, ptsd, schizophrenia, bipolar manic episode, etc., which can completely alter their state of mind. Yet, when they get back to some sort of a more balanced mind space they can always feel who cared about them when they were most vulnerable. They don’t remember, they just feel it! Feelings are magic because you can’t see them but you know they are there, and being is being. We all want to feel cared for, especially in our darkest times. ⭐️ We are all coping ✨ Every single one of us is coping every day, we just have different ways of doing it. The time people spend scrolling through social media is coping. The people using drugs to escape their thoughts are coping. The workaholic who is highly successful is coping. We are humans getting through life and no one will EVER have the perfect formula because to stop coping means that you don’t have any problems or difficulties to get through. This Veterans Day I challenge you to appreciate your community, feel the magic around you, and be kind to yourself because you too are coping with life and I’m sure you’re doing a great job ❤️

Happy Veterans Day to my fellow service members. Today, we honor those who have served, those currently serving, and those who will step up to serve in the future. During my time in service, one acronym that profoundly resonated with me was LDRSHIP. Taught from the earliest days of basic training, it encapsulates the Army Values, each letter, a pillar of leadership and commitment: Loyalty: To our country, our team, and our values. Duty: Fulfilling our obligations and missions. Respect: Upholding dignity and humanity. Selfless Service: Prioritizing the welfare of the nation and others. Honor: Living and serving with integrity. Integrity: Doing what's right, legally and morally. Personal Courage: Facing fear, danger, or adversity. These values, instilled in us during service, don't just fade away when we hang up our uniforms. They are a part of us in our daily lives, guiding how we lead at our civilian jobs and in our communities. Being a service member isn't just about the time we serve; it's about carrying that sense of leadership and duty with us always, wherever we go. Happy Veterans Day.
