💡 Questioned today by stakeholders and fellow-researchers about the report issued by the 💰 European Court of Auditors on the EU wine policy, I didn't have to dig deep for replies. "The auditors lament the fact that, despite the large amount of funding involved, the EU’s wine policy has done little for the environment. " 🌱 The EU reality increasingly seems to align with the Belgian context which I analysed in the "Climate resilience of Belgian wine production sector"-paper in 2021. Is a Copernican turn inevitable for EU wine future, where inspired "old continent" programmes and inspiring, inventive "emerging wine regions" have no other choice than to collaborate, facing the multiple challenges? This PhD is more worthy than ever. #sciencebased #fromconcepttoconcrete #expertpanel #roadmap #baselinemeasurements #improvement_trajectory #TestEnvironmentAbroad #coolclimatewines #emergingwineregions #PioneerBelgianClimateWines https://lnkd.in/ecX8fsAi

🥔 There is now a common recognition that food is a soft point at the heart of our efforts to transition to ways of living which are truly sustainable. In Irish history, food holds meanings which run deeper than our conscious memory. Walking in the Irish mountains, you may come across small parallel ridges in the Earth. These old potato drills hold memories of the struggle for food and survival during the hardships of the 1800s. Our language is limited in its capacity to convey this meaning of food beyond sustenance. 🤝 The article linked below speaks of ‘radical collaboration’. But it is radical only in its contemporary context. We each hold the history of working together for a common purpose in our cells. This is the perspective which forms the ground of Bioregional Weaving. 🐄 In the greater Waterford bioregion our Bioregional Weaving Lab is working as a partner in the Climate-KIC Flagship titled ‘A new normal for sustainable dairy’. Since the beginning of the ‘activation phase’ in September 2023, the Irish weaving team has been visiting farmers and other stakeholders in the region and hosting online gatherings and workshops. 👩🌾 On December 6th, BWL hosted a workshop in the Copper Coast Geopark visitor centre, with the intention of co-visioning the future of the dairy system in the Waterford Bioregion. 13 stakeholders attended, bringing energy and wisdom from their respective life experiences and expertise. These were mostly dairy farmers from Waterford, Cork, and Wexford, as well as retired or ex-dairy farmers, and representatives from organisations such as the Local Authority Waters Program. 🌱 In this short time, our connections and understandings have deepened. Our intention is to carry forward with the deep contributions made by all that we have met and spoken to. There are already many ideas in action and emerging. This collective work feeds into the overall intention of the BWL in Waterford, to “build a resilient food system that supports thriving landscapes, seascapes and communities”. 👉 If you are interested in learning more or engaging, please reach out to Ali Crighton (ali@bwl.ie) or Sarah Prosser (Sarah@bwl.ie). https://lnkd.in/dFG2g5WK #BWL #Waterford #dairy #ClimateKIC

Today Ezio Manzini provided feedback to our third-year students about their food systems understanding. Ezio asked the students were was their interest in the system. He invited the students to reflect about the labels they selected, why “civilians”? He invited the students to make visible the relationships, for example between buying potatoes that are not Swiss, and the taxes we pay. He made the students see the Link between the quality of the environment, and the work of farmers. Ezio asked: why are farmers not rewarded for this? Revising the understanding of the role and value of farmers in Switzerland seems to be key. #Sustainability #FoodSystems

A new generation of long-term public policies, more investment in science and innovation, viable technological solutions for farmers that allow them to make changes in their production and apply good agricultural practices, and stronger links between the public and private sectors: all these elements are crucial in moving towards sustainable agriculture and strengthening global food security. To address these common points of interest, the Director of the Latin American Program of The Wilson Center, Benjamin Gedan; the President of EARTH University, Arturo Condo; and the Director General of the IICA, Manuel Otero, engaged in a public dialogue entitled “Global food security and sustainable agriculture in Latin America.” 📰👇

Due to geopolitical dynamics, free trade is under attack everywhere in the world. Our current Great Power Competition has major consequences for the EU and the Netherlands. It requires a completely different mindset with respect to the EU’s industrial policies. Dr. Evdokia Krystallidou, Director of the Innovation & Impact HUB of American Farm School, has been voted one of the 50 most influential executives in the Food Innovation sector 🎉🎉 Dr. Krystallidou stated: "Research and innovation pave new paths in agri-food, and their value becomes wealth for society and the economy when someone mediates to connect researchers with users. Our duty, as need scouts and innovation intermediaries, is to ensure that these paths remain accessible and open for all, environmentally green, and productive for the economy and society." The Food Innovation 50 list is the first effort by Foodreporter and BOUSSIAS media to deeply explore and discover those executives from the R&D departments of food and beverage industries, including laboratories, inspections, studies, and research, as well as academic figures in the fields of food technology and safety, who contribute innovation and new scientific data. At the end of the day, they transform research into practice, adding value to the final product and the market itself. 🔗 See the full Food Innovation 50 Powerlist 2024 in the online edition: https://lnkd.in/d8Mrk-CT #foodinnovation #agrifood #americanfarmschool
