Today, I appeared in front of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security to discuss Microsoft's commitment and ongoing work to strengthen cybersecurity protection. These are my opening remarks:

This is a master class in how to testify; and with no notes. Impressive.

Considering the fact that 90%+ of cyberattacks are initiated with a phishing email, can I request that as part of a new Exchange Online setup, Microsoft 365 force the user to setup DKIM signing for emails, and strongly encourage them to get DMARC compliant? A persistent banner in Outlook and all over the admin interface would get the admin to figure it out or find someone who can.

Very upsetting seeing a politician asking Mr. Smith if Microsoft can bring people together since we as a country are so divided and enemies can use that as leverage. Politicians should do the job they’re paid for. This is the result of years of hatred and divisiveness. It’s not up to Microsoft to fix the social mess they created

I appreciate hearing the comments, but more importantly, the tangible accountability Microsoft is bringing to the table.

IMHO The House needs a permanent delegation of senior technologists, technology strategists, CISO types etc from Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, Apple, etc to answer basic tech questions and provide education and context all year round. That way nobody has to bury their face in their hands when what should be a discussion about world-changing policy and strategy is derailed by a 6hr explanation of cookies. If we want legislators to legislate wisely, we need to equip them for wisdom first. Sign me up.

It was an incredibly authentic testimony, it made me proud to work at Microsoft.

Great leadership points from Microsoft in some unnerving times for cybersecurity and information security professionals. Personally I think 1) greater accountability breeds humility and 2) hacker DEI far outpaces cyber hiring DEI. Both need addressing globally for our collective best interests.
