Thrilled to have participated in the incredible master class hosted by the Threat Response Unit (TRU) of eSentire! It was particularly inspiring to see MCTI alumni returning as presenters and designing the CTF challenge. One standout moment was when Guangyi Z. explained the Pyramid of Pain with a memorable analogy: catching a person commuting to work. They might use different buses, drive a car, or walk, but the easiest way to catch them is to wait outside their office. Similarly, attackers might change their IP addresses or hash values—like changing buses—to evade detection, but their ultimate goals and methods become predictable once they succeed. They are less likely to change their core tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs). This lesson underscores the importance of focusing on the higher levels of the pyramid, where attackers’ TTPs are less likely to change. The CTF challenge focused on threat hunting and required us to investigate an SSH brute force attack. This hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing us to apply Yara rules in our investigation until we found the flag.
