Oski might not always win but he will almost always be the most memorable, unexpected and entertaining skater to watch. Oski also manifest the history of how Nike finally successfully managed to enter skateboarding on the third attempt led by Sandy Bodecker, using Nike Dunks and launching the Nike SB sub brand. It took Nike +25 years to reach where they are today within skateboarding. About the same age as Oski. They had do go back in time and go slow to create the future of skateboarding. They put Sandy Bodecker on the case, who is the right-hand man of Mark Parker (CEO) and Phil Knight. He was also the man they put to the task of Nike Soccer in Europe, another market that Nike found tough to enter. Bodecker understood that if Nike wanted to be successful in skateboaring they needed to come in with skateboarding's best interest in mind. This time around he made sure they gave back a lot to the skateboard community, shops and skaters. He also understood skateboarding and the importance of authenticity in the community that surrounds it. Bodecker also understood that Nike had a rich history in skateboarding and he wanted to play on that history, instead of trying to design new shoes.” DUNKS ”His plan was to re-introduce the Dunk to skateboarding because it was so popular in the past and it resembles the Nike Jordans that are huge in skateboarding history. He also partnered with some of the best and most well-respected core skateboard shops, many of whom felt like they were being left behind as skateboarding was becoming more mainstream and the skate shoe brands were focusing more and more on the mall stores.” ORIGINAL NIKE SB TEAM ”Jeffers said he wanted to start the Nike SB team with all "timeless" skaters, not the flavor of the month pros. In an interview, Jeffers said, “I want Rick Howard to look at the team and say ‘that’s rad’”. I took my teen to the skateboarding exhibit at the Design Museum this weekend. It was a really great curated history of how the evolving design of the board, alongside shifts in culture has changed the sport. It was really fascinating (and nostalgic!). They had also gone to the effort of building a great mini ramp within the space which would have created a rich leaning through play experience if it wasn't for the fact the ramp was limited to over 16s only and required a waiver to be signed 24 hours in advance (never heard of this before and have signed a lot of them for my adrenalin seeking kid!). After deep immersion into skate culture and specifically how it has always created its own rules, it was then at complete odds to then be met with a lot of....well, rules. There was even an inspirational quote on the outside the ramp about rule breaking with a museum member of staff perched next to it 'policing' its use. LOL. There was no one using the ramp and the only people there with their boards ready to skate were tweens and young teens (who all looked very miffed). It was very frustrating when you consider the average age of skaters is around 12 - 16 years (the boys went to skate off their rage outside and museum staff came out and told them off!) It reminded me of something I've been noticing recently in broader brand activity; not fully honouring the authenticity of a community or an unearthed misalignment between behind the scenes and 'front of house experience'. It really strikes hard today. Brands should be taking more risks and put meaning out into the world, but with the knowledge that it's an even bigger risk to just go half way and not go all in. Those legals and bureaucracy notes, often are presented as unavoidable and to be expected and accepted, often end up destroying really great intention and creativity.

I've been actively throwing my body onto concrete for close to 30 years now. Skateboarding my entire life has taught me more than any other thing. It's how I got sober. It's the reason I know that nothing good in life comes easy, and you have to fight through blood, sweat, and tears if you want to grow. To me, street skateboarding is the ultimate form of creativity. Once you get the thrill, you'll never see the world around you the same. Every handrail, every stair set, every ledge becomes an obstacle of opportunity. A challenge. Your entire environment becomes a playground for your imagination - a trophy of self expression. In street skateboarding, you have a crazy vision and you do whatever it takes to make it a reality. That often means hundreds of tries and slams. Cops constantly harassing you and writing you tickets (unless you manage to outrun them). Broken boards. Broken bones. Multiple trips back to try again when you push your body to its limit, and have to come back another day. And when you finally land the trick, you're left with a 3 second clip to add to your video part. Those 3 second moments are the most powerful moments I've experienced in life (besides my son being born). Proof that even what is thought to be impossible (sometimes even by yourself), if you full commit to something and push yourself far beyond your comfort zone, the reward can be profound. A video part consists of dozens of those little 3 second battles you came out from victorious. Thousands of slams over 2+ years to produce a 3 minute video part. Some of my most proud moments, although the majority of people would call it utter insanity. I apply 3 decades of street skateboarding to everything I do in life. If I'm going to do something, I go all in. Failure is inevitable, but you pick your bloody self up off the concrete and you try again. And again. And again. Being an entrepreneur is just like skateboarding. The ones that survive are the ones that can repeatedly get beat down and never give up. With all the issues in the world, I wish society could see the life-changing impacts of skateboarding. It's the best thing that ever happened to me.
